We will be traveling from Shreveport to Lake Charles on Tuesday 9/8. My mapping program takes us via the Interstate, but in looking at the map, US-171 appears to be a more direct route. Does anyone know anything about this road? Is there any reason we wouldn't want to travel it pulling our 36' fiver?
No reason not to travel on 171. It's a bit slower, more towns and lower speed limits, but as I recall the road is fine.
I usually take 49 south out of Shreveport to about Natchitoches exit, hiway 6 I believe, go west short distance and pickup hiway 117 and head south down to Leesville, then pick up 171 south to Lake Charles. I think I save some time by not going through so many small towns all the way on 171.

On paper it is about 50/50. Hwy 171 is a few less miles and a few more minutes than I-49~165.
In my case 171 would be faster and probably a lot cheaper. Hwy 165 takes you right past Coushatta Casino at Kinder and I'd probably have to stop.
By the way, they have a very nice RV park at the casino.

Thanks. We've stayed at the campground at the Coushatta Casino. We're not much for casinos but the CG is beautiful and a good deal. We'd stay there again if we didn't have friends to visit in Westlake.
