It is time that I grease the bearing on my Cameo. I have the dexter type with the grease fitting. What type of grease do I use? Is there a compatability issue? I understand that I don't need to add much grease at all. This is my second season on the unit and it has about 3500 miles on it. Any adivice?

thanks,

Depending upon the miles you put on your unit each year, it is a good practice to grease the wheels every year, at the start of you're camping season. If traveling many miles, like over 5000, I grease the wheels during the trip. Yep, do not over grease the wheels, just a few 2 or 3 squirts from the grease gun is all it needs. Some pull there wheels every few years to check the condition of the break shoes, not a bad idea. I use synthetic grease when doing mine, read the information provided with the grease. When I replaced my brakes on my fiver, it had traveled for 11 years and over 45 thousand miles. I replaced the WHOLE brake assembly as it was cheeper and better than just replacing the shoes.

After finding a leaking seal on my previous camper. I repack mine by hand. I've read on here some jack up one trailer wheel at a time and rotate the wheel while greasing that bearing. Sounds like a good idea if you are going to use the grease zerks.

Many make the mistake of just adding add'l grease to the zerk in lieu of repacking the bearings. I repack every year; gives me a chance to grease the suspension, inspect / adjust brakes and go over the bearings thoroughly. The first time I did them, there was an enormous amount of grease between the bearings - the previous owner only added via the zerk. Too much of a good thing...

If the seal fails... you're greasing your brake shoes.. why risk it?? pull the wheel and hand pack for me...

I inspect them once a year, replace the seals, & pack them. Every once in a while I'll add some using the zerk fitting.

BTW I use Kendall Super Blue grease. It comes in a small tub & a tube for your grease gun.

With grease being thick, it's important to pump the grease in slowly so the old grease can ooze out of the front bearing without creating pressure on the seal at the rear bearing.

If you only add a couple of squirts at a tme you will die of old age before the outer bearing gets any new grease. The hub has to be completely packed with grease before the outer bearing gets any. You decide if you want to gamble that the inner seal will hold or that it isn't worn enough to allow the grease to get to the brake linings. If your plan is to purge the old grease out compatability isn't an issue. Should only take about two tubes to do the job.
