Here is a map of the southern route through the Bighorn National Forest.

http://www.publiclands.org/explore/quadrant_map.php?quad=wy_q4z1

Hopefully you all can get a look at it. Next week, we're looking at stopping at one of the state campgounds shown along Hwy 16 between Buffalo and Ten Sleep, WY. We're traveling in a 34' MH with the four kids (4-11). Were looking for a scenic place spend just one afternoon/eveniong before heading into YNP the next day. We'll get enough full hook-up nights at Fishing Bridge, and we wanted to rough-it a little. Are there any favorites or "avoids" along this stretch?

Thanks!!

As you said there are dozens to choose from in the national forest My suggestion is to pull in and see what you like and move on to the next one if it's not what you're looking for. Many are within a half mile of the highway. Good luck / Skip

Several years ago we made a trip through there. I think we got off the I at Ranchester (?) to cross the Big Horns. Along the way, we stopped beside Sibley Lake, wound up staying 3 nights. LOts of fish, elk, deer, and Moose to numerous to count. On the way down to Yellowstone, we stopped beside a huge water fall for lunch. What a beautiful drive.

I envy you! We have driven thru several times and said we would like to return just for the Big Horns... haven't yet!

There are sooo many nice sites that we saw from the highway, I can't think you could go wrong at any place! Not to mention off the beaten path.

The best National Forest Campground between Buffalo and Ten Sleep, IMO, is Sitting Bull. It is reservable on recreation.gov
We parked our 43' motorhome there with no problem.

For pictures, go to:

Campsite

Do the drive through the Crazy Woman Canyon (leave the rig in the campground) Crazy Woman Canyon

Have a great time. It's beautiful up there!

We just returned from the Big Horns a couple of weeks ago and scouted most of the USFS campgrounds. As noted, most of these can be reserved at recreation.gov and most have campground hosts for wood.

On Hwy 16 the ones we liked best were South Fork and Middle Fork. We prefer private sites nestled in the mountains with streams or lakes. Sitting Bull is in a nice wooded area at the edge of a meadow but it seems geared toward ATVs since it has good trail access for them. There were many buzzing around.

My recommendations in order of preference:

South Fork Site 3, reservable (Pull straight in and stream is 30 feet out your door)

South Fork Site 2, reservable (Back in, more tighter than site 3)

Middel Fork Site 4 Reservable (small stream is out of view at back of site, host is at Tie Hack or South Fork)

Middle Fork, Site 5 Non-reservable (stream in back again)

Middle Fork Site 6 Reservable (stream in back again)

You can see all the campgrounds we visited here:
