We are traveling from Muskegon, MI to Springfield, IL and would like to avoid the Gary, Indiana; Chicago area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated.
Any particular reason to avoid it? I-80 is pretty good through there, really. Just a little backup around I-65 (or if there's an accident - but that could occur anywhere.)
I grew up in Muskegon! Have family and friends back there and when we drive up from Texas we take IH-57 and exit in Gilman and take Highway 24 East to North IH-65, then NE on IH-94 up the coastline.
We like this route because there was quite a bit of construction a few years back and in addition, there seems to less big truck traffic.
If you choose this route you could stay on Highway 24 and travel West to IH-55, or take IH-57 down to Champaign and then take IH-72 West to Springfield.
