Okay, I'll try to keep this brief. Our toad is a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, two wheel drive and it doesn't have positive traction nor does it have a limited strip rear end and is pulled with a class A. We haven't noticed the noise while being toad - although it may be there and we just haven't heard it. (We haven't used the motorhome much this year. We're a little nervous about taking the toad very far but the noise has been going on for about a year and a half.) It is only noticed when we make sharp turns and then it sounds like metal hitting metal. I've had it in the shop three different time and had new axle bearings put on, checked the axle and rear end. There is no metal debris and no wear and tear. Some days the noise is worse than others. (We even considered that the weather made a difference??)Sometimes I think the wheel or rear-end is going to fall off. It is so loud it gets people's attention on the street.(Rather embarrassing.) I'm told it is road worthy but I want it fixed. Has anyone else had a problem like this and could it have happen in the towing? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bill and Kathi

You said the Jeep is 2003 and 2wd and that you are towing it???? hummm
you did not mention if the transmission was manual or automatic?
if its manual and 2wd then it is towable (these vehicles are very rare) if it is 2wd and auto...then it has to have a driveshaft disconnect, and if installed incorrectly it will have a noise at the very least. the other posibility is that it in fact is limited slip and not standard rear end...lift the car at the rear, both wheels off the ground, blocked and chocked for safety on level parking lot.... rotate either wheel in the forward direction.....what direction does the other wheel spin in....the same direction= posi or limited slip , no rotation or reverse rotation on the other side= regular rear end...grab driveline and rock it in circular motion clockwise then counterclockwise....there should be only a VERY slight amount of free play....excessive free play can mean you have a carrier bearing problem or mis aligned input shaft free play...get that checked out!!!
hope that helps.

Your limited slip differential is toast.

Heed the opinion of the "fool". I doubt that it is towable and you are very fortunate that you have not had more problems.

The '03 towing guide at Motorhomemagazine.com says no to 2wd towable,, or at least it isn't listed.
The problem though sounds like it is the limited slip differential and not the transmission.

Two Wheel Drive Jeep Grand Cherokees are not towable without modifications such as drive shaft disconect.

OP, that doesn't "sound" good! As I remember none of the two wheel drive automatic GC's were towable.
Our GC was full time four wheel drive (Quadra Trak) with the off road package and towed fine for many 1,000's of miles.

I tow a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X2 automatic with a drive shaft disconnect behind my class A DP. It doesn't make any strange noises after 10,000 miles. Sounds like your drive shaft may need to be balanced or the u-joints are bad.
