Back in our flying days..My wife Judy, also a pilot, and I went to fly ins around the country and have camped under the wing. While living in Alaska we had grand times flying out to remote lakes and spending some quality time fishing and just being together with nature. My wife actually got birds to land on her and eat from her hands. We would never see another person for a week or two while there. Oh, how I miss those days.

Yes I enjoyed flying when I was younger but can't afford it now. I had several planes but all are gone now. My first was a 1947 Navion 225hp that I had for several years when I worked at United in SFO. I then owned a Cessna Custlass and joined it with a 68 Beech Baron. I then added a Cesna 150 to the fleet. All were fun planes. The longest journey was from Oregon to Texas accross the Guylf to Miami then to the Bahamas and on to the Turks and Cacos Islands.

We used to do quite a bit of airplane camping. In fact a group of about 16 of us had Aeronca Champs and formed a club known as the BOAC - Beat-up Old Airplane Club. We did quite a bit of flying around the west coast and Alaska, looked for older grass or gravel strips and pitched a tent under the wing. We also looked for airports near a river and did some fishing. We also had an annual get together at Copalis Beach - the only designated ocean beach airstrip in the lower 48 - here in Washington State. We put the sleeping bags, tent, water and food in the small baggage area and stuffed a two man rubber raft under the front seat. Fly out to the beach, land on the sand, push back above the tide line and have fun. Now how many folks do you know that carry their ocean going yacht in their airplane - lol. We have had several airplanes over the years but the Champs were to my mind, the most fun.

We have loaded a C-195 with camping gear and headed to Oshkosh a few times. Many, many years ago I did a trip with a PT-17 and a tent. Stopped at some private strips and small county/city airports.

I have an airline transport license as well as an instructor rating. I spent more than 10 years as a full time flight instructor until last year. I owned a Piper Cherokee 140 for more than 20 years. During that time I had the good fortune to fly to Sun and fun in Lakeland as well as Oshkosh for the Airventure and tent under the wing. Both of those trips provide enjoyment equal to any you might experience while RVing. Many uncontrolled small airports welcome airplane campers much like Walmart does for RVs. You would not be welcome at controlled airports with commercial operations.

We do a lot of flying and camping in Spec Ops. Fly to Iraq or Afghanistan and live in tents for a few months at a time.
It's actually better now. Many of the living quarters are hard structures. But right after 911 when we deployed to Afghanistan we lived strictly in tents. There are 13 on an AC-130 crew and we all lived in one tent. You find a spot, build your nest, and make it your own as much as you can.
Use to own 2 planes myself. A Piper Arrow and Archer. Grew up around flying. My dad had 3 planes and we had a hangar and grass strip at our house. Good memories.

Hello RV Center. Two niner five three three.
OK so here is the deal:
Why is it Tom Cruise flies a P-51 and Travolta has a bus. Mannnnnnnnn if I had
their money, I'd have a C-130!! How great would that be all the toys on board and able to land anywhere. I guess Tom and John just don't like to RV.
Now what did I do with that lotto ticket??
