We prefer Myrtle Beach Travel Park! We love it But any of the big campgrounds at Myrtle are great. James Island County Park is the place to stay in Charleston. If JICP is full Oak Plantation is also nice and convenient.
Happy Camping !!

ocean lakes is way to go lots of concert pads, all pull tru. this time of year not crowded have lots of room and there pet friendly. if you like seafood murrells inlet a must, travel park is also good they have more shade trees. thats my two cents
We loved Willow Tree RV Resort...it is about 10 minutes outside of North Myrtle Beach and about 25 from Myrtle Beach itself...huge sites, nice facilities (we even had the spa at the site)..we WILL be going back there. Beautiful walk around lake and a clear shot at the satellite too. Worth every penny...

All of the suggestions above are great, we have stayed at all of them at one time or another. We also like going to Apache Campground, because of the fishing pier. If you plan on doing any fishing this is the only campground that has a fishing pier.
September is a very popular time to come to MB. Campgrounds have lower rates than in 'high summer', but none of them are really reasonable, except for the state parks. There are 2, Myrtle Beach SP and Huntington Beach SP (about 20 miles south of MB). Both have some full hook ups, and both have direct access to the ocean, but no ocean front sites. They are both less than $25/night with full hook ups (but no cable TV, although a few sites in MBSP can use satellite dish, and many more in HBSP). We love both of them.
As far as private CG, MB Travel park may well be the best pick. Willow Tree is nice, but no where near MB or the ocean, despite what they say. The 'big 3' (Ocean Lakes, Pirateland, Lakewood) have many sites, close together, most of them not pull thru. The KOA in MB is really a nice CG, with Pull thrus, but not on the ocean.
In Charleston, agree with the previous post of James Island County Park (a Good Sam) or Oak Plantation. Have been to both and can't go wrong either way. Depending on where your friends are in Charleston area, the KOA north of the city is fine too. Most sites are pull thrus and good WiFi in most areas of CG as well.

Go and enjoy!!
If you plan on staying for two weeks on the same site, you better make reservations ASAP! Although it is not quite as crowded on week days this time of year, weekends will still be packed.
This time of year the weather is fantatstic! Just got back from Ocean lakes yesterday. I've stayed at all the ocean front campgrounds at one time or another. Most are nice.
Can't say that I would recommend Lakewood. They do not have pull thru sites. Too many weird rules. Staff is indifferent & aloof.

Definitely get a concrete pad! It's a nice place, but some of the non-paved sites become sink holes.
They did pay for the hook.
You might want to have this moved to the campgrounds forum.
We like both Ocean Lakes and Myrtle Beach Travel Park. Ocean Lakes has many concrete pads if you prefer that. Both have sites on/near the ocean. Ocean view can be somewhat blocked by the berm/dune.
FYI, there is a nice off-leash municipal dog park only about 2 miles from Ocean Lakes on Rt. 17 business near the old Air Force base....right behind the Food Lion store.
Also recommend James Island County Park for a Charleston visit.
