Durango is a little south of COLORADO'S BEST but would be a good "home" for the adventure lands in the high country....a good experience while in Durango would be the DSNGRR train ride from Durango to Silverton...not BOTH WAYS (MAKES A LONG DAY)....IMHO, of course

Head up to Silverton and the Alpine Loop -- one of the best and best known -- for the most part if they mined Silver in the hills they have trails.

This was a web site I think 4runnerguy suggested --

http://www.narrowgauge.org/4x4/html/4X4.html

for more detailed info you might do a search using 4runnerguy -- this is his back yard -- and for my money he is the Colorado Authority on the San Juan's -- Hard to find a place that let's you get closer to a "Majestic Place" than the San Juan's.

Hope this helps,

BOL,

Yep, if you're in the area, the Alpine Loop is a MUST. We've driven it several times, and it get's prettier every time.

Credit where credit is due....I got it from 4runnerguy long ago....as many on this site, he has been very helpful with resources. I pray the economy picks up a bit and I can get back to this area this coming summer. I loved it.
