I think it is good that Chrysler is spinning off the Ram into a separate brand. I don't see Dodge surviving and their full-size trucks right now are probably in the top 2 or 3 for half ton, and top two for anything bigger.

The way I see it, if Chrysler survives at all we will see Fiat (either wearing Chrysler or Dodge nameplates), the Ram trucks, and Jeep survive. After branding Fiats for a few years as Dodge or Chrysler (since Fiat has no name recognition here in the U.S. and there was little new product development under Daimler so Chrysler/Dodge doesn't really have anything in the pipeline) I can see one of the U.S. nameplates surviving on its own down the road (with U.S. designs) alongside Fiat (once Americans get used to them), Ram and Jeep. I really don't see both nameplates surviving and it looks like separating out the Ram name is the first step to making Chrysler the brand for U.S. designed Chrysler cars. I just wonder what nameplate the minivan will wear (Chrysler Town and Country, Ram Caravan, or will it be replaced by a Fiat design).

No Matter what he said it should have been no suprise. Crebus and Magna only exist to cut the profitable arms out of a company and discard the carcass.

In all fairness I think Cerberus bought some good that were damaged beyond repair by Diamler. Diamler tidily outfitted CHysler with many of their old platforms and technology then bailed and left them with nothing to build on when they sold. I don't recall seeing a next gen 300 or Charger displayed ever. Cerberus had been shooping for deals with other automakers to get platforms for fill ins to bide time until their own designs could reach production. Look no further than the deal they were trying to get done with Nissan. More and more it was looking like it was Chrysler wanting to get it done than Nissan. Chrysler wanted a subcompact platform (Versa) and were pushing to get a mid sized platform (Altima) in the the deal as well.

Cerberus is a vulture fund. Yes they were trying to get parts of Chrysler profitable but only so they could flog them. They got blind sided by the economic melt down.

Magna is one of the largest auto parts producers in the world and they also assemble complete vehicles for companies such as Mercedes and BMW. They have around 250 manufacturing plants in 25 countries.

Big difference between the two.

You make it sound like this is a bad thing? This is the reality of capitalism and how productivity and use of capital is maximized. You need to move to socialism to protect the carcass

I worked for a company that was in creditor protection and taken over by a group of which Cerberus was a major part. Once the share holders, bond holders, creditors and employees were screwed over, they came out with little debt and a lean profitable company. They then formed a separate holding company which became the majority owner. They then sold off the majority of the assets and distributed most of the 2.8 billion they got for them to the holding company shareholders (themselves). The said company was hit hard by the recession but now has little left in the way of assets or cash to get through it, because most disappeared into the pockets of the holding company's shareholders. The holding company is now trying to wind itself up by distributing whatever remains to its shareholders. The company they raped employs around 16,000 people.

This is the worst kind of capitalism. It makes some people very rich but it produces nothing, it builds nothing.

As far at the Chrysler/Fiat thing goes, we'll have to wait and see. It depends of Fiat's vision for the company. The Renault/Nissan combination has been very successful so it can work. At least it will be run by someone who actually builds cars.
