We will be visiting Topsail State Park in Northwest Florida mid-November and would appreciate opinions on which route to take. We will be in a 40' MH with toad coming from the West on I-10. MS S&T suggests taking US-98 off of I-10 at Pensacola but looking at options. Seems like US-98 would be scenic but also lots of traffic and lights. Since we will be there a week I would prefer to sight see via the car. Would it be better to take FL-80 to FL-20 and take the Mid Bay Bridge to US-98 just east of Destin? Or, would US-331 off of I-10 to US-98 just east of Topsail be a better option? Or, just suck it up and take US-98 out of Pensacola?

We have driven from Perdido Key to Topsail a few times - both ways. We just went on 98 the whole way. No problem at all. It's 4 lane the whole way. It's a long drive up to 10. There will be plenty of areas to see in the car.

I use 331. It's a faster route than 98 with a lot less traffic on it.

I wouldn't get off I-10 in P'cola. Better to continue a bit further east and take Exit 31 (Hwy 87) south to Navarre. Hwy 87 t's into Hwy 98 in Navarre and it's an easy drive into Destin then to Santa Rosa Beach where you'll see the signage for Topsail.

Going through P'cola will slow you down and you'll hit many lights. Then it's a painfully slow crawl through Gulf Breeze before you end up going through Navarre anyway.

331 is a doable option as well. Either way...avoid going through P'cola to pick up Hwy 98.

We've only been once but did 331 from I-10 to 98. It wasn't a bad ride at all except the road got a little wavy around the bridge. We were coming from east though so 331 seemed logically as point to turn south.

I would take 331 to 98, but be aware that they are currently working on a road project south of the bridge on 331 - from the bridge to where it connects with 98. Sometimes the traffic can back up, but nothing compared to what the lights will create by going 98 all the way.

I've gone 331, 85 and 98 via P'cola. As others have said, 98 has many lights. 331 is wavy and a little out of the way. 85 thru Niceville is the best way. Not a big deal but you will pay at least a $7.50 toll if you have a toad.

Mark,

Stay on I-10 as long as you can and then cut south to 98. Taking 98 from Pensacola through Ft. Walton will be continuous stop and go at traffic lights. We have done it in the car several times and it gets old fast. You will love Topsail. We have been there quite a few times.

Thanks for all the good tips. In spite of the toll hwy 85 looks to be a good route. The extra distance on 331 partially offsets the toll.
