We're heading to Lake Whitney State Park in a few days and would like some information on good sites for us to set up in; we plan on being there for about 4 days and would like to be next to the lake but would love to have some shade from the Texas sun. We will need a site large enough for our 38' 5th wheel.
I haven't been there in quite a while, but your chances for shade are much better than a view of the lake. The sites are in a big loop, which is a bit of a distance away from the lake, but definitely walking distance. The last time I reserved a site at a TX state park, I used Reserve America. That site will tell you the shade description, as well as how long the site is. Click on the site number, and a list of facts will come up.
I second the above post. It's been a while. There are sites by the lake but they are not premium. I don't know how large an RV they will accept. The premium site loop has no view of the lake. Lots of wildlife though!! Lots of deer and turkey...

I checked Reserve America, and the sites are assigned at your arrival. I suppose you could drive through and pick out a vacant one. Good luck. It is a nice park, and there are sites big enough for your rig.
We were there not too long ago and stayed in #129. Very nice shaded pull-thru spot with plenty of room. Whitney is indeed first-come first-serve, so getting there early is key. 129 is part of a section of seven (124-130) pull-thru sites, and all are nice.
Have fun,
