I really could not recommend any mattress that has air chambers in it due to moisture buildup. As we sleep our bodies naturally give off moisture and the lack of air flow around vinyl/plastic chambers and through the mattress results in mildew buildup inside the mattress. Inner spring mattress construction and foam toppers give the necessary air flow through the mattress to keep it dry. Trust someone who has allergies to mildew. The standard RV mattress with a memory foam topper and a heavy quilted mattress pad is the answer for us. Very comfortable and no morning backaches.
RVnRobin and DW.
Love my 94 Dodge 2500 almost as much as I love my DW.
Our queen mattress in our previous 5er was not very comfortable at all, we too bought a 3" foam. Got a great price at OverStock.com
Here's a link Serta 3" Memory foam Topper Their website states that today is the last day to get $1.00 shipping on your entire order. I also bought from OverStock a mattress cover that fit both regular and deep pocket mattresses. This helped keep the topper in place.
A few months ago we bought a new 5er, it came with a pillow top RV mattress, I didn't even know they made such a thing. Anyway, it's very comfortable, no need for a foam topper for this bed!
If you do decide to replace your mattress, you might ask you dealer if he could order a pillow top RV mattress for you.
Just an FYI - Most RV's do not come with a standard size mattress, they are a little shorter and narrower. Be sure to measure your door to see if you can get a new mattress in.
Replacement RV mattresses come in a long narrow box about 8" x 8" wide. The instructions tell you to open the box in the RV bedroom only! It unrolls to the correct size after opening.
Good luck!

Our TT mattress is awful. I tried the memory foam bit, bought a 5 inch topper from Overstock.com and cut it to fit. Its an improvement but it doesn't stay put very well and I don't think it looks too great. Our RV queen was 60X74 which is too short for me anyway. Today at lunch I stopped by the local mattress shop where we bought the stix and brix bedding and ordered a custom made 60X76 pillowtop mattress. There is a $100 premium for the special size but no box spring is needed so the price is still less than the set...what I ordered will be about $550. IMHO it's worth the cost. I think I will cut the memory foam down and put it on the wide bunk in the back of the TT.

When we ordered our 2000 DSDP one of the options was a pillow top mattress, we didn't order it. The standard mattress wasn't very good. When we ordered our 2002 DSDP we got the pillow top mattress. It is very good, even compared to our 14" memory foam one in the stick house.
ONe problem with the air bed is the change in altitude works like a baloon as the go higher the mattress expands so you need to let the air out before you travel . all in all the foam is the least trouble and works great. I have had both.

One issue we had was that "standard" sheets don't fit well, and the "right" sheets are more expensive. I had an old pair of heavy duty suspenders I don't use, (one of those promotional items many years ago), so I put the fitted sheet on the mattress, tipped it up and clipped the suspenders in an "X" pattern, corner to corner. Paydirt! sheet and pad are now tight, no sheet crawl in the night, better sleep, and DW is happy!

Can anyone recommend a good queen size mattress?
Thanks!
Darn!!
I was all set to forward on some of the spam I get everyday about help on the mattress!!
OK, so much for the smart remarks!
As I posted earlier the pillow top mattress is really good, but one advantage we have is that it's a standard size queen so we can get a new one almost anywhere unlike some that got a short queen.
Hello. I'm a newbie (both to this forum and to RVing) and this is my first post here. We just brought our new travel trailer toy hauler home and yes, the "bed" is awful. It isn't even a real mattress, just a piece of egg-crate foam about 2 to 3 inches thick, wrapped in cloth material. We haven't slept on it yet and don't want to. You can immediately feel the hard wood bed surface by just sitting on it....so...I did some research...and considering our budget...decided to go with the reviews I read on a number of different store websites. The ones that consistently sounded the best were on the Wal-Mart website (from other RVers). Below is a list of the three items we ordered online. We haven't tried them yet...just unwrapped the Spa Sensations topper today to let it air out for a few days (per instructions)...and then will put a grip pad on top of the plywood base to keep the bedskirt from slipping, another piece of grip pad on that to keep the original mattress from slipping, then the 3" Viscolatex topper on the mattress, then the "puffball" pad on top of that, the quilted mattress pad on top of that, then the fitted sheet. I might have to use those sheet corner grips to keep the sheet from slipping, but I don't know yet. Anyway, according to many reviews I read, it's supposed to feel like heaven.
I hope so, because our old bones need it. We're so spoiled in our home!...we bought a king size Sleep Number bed about two years ago (very expensive) and we absolutely LOVE it! It's worth every penny and we never wake up with those terrible backaches anymore!...BUT, we just couldn't really and didn't want to spend that kind of money in the RV. We have so much yet to learn. We thought we would have sold our house about three years ago (we tried!), but that didn't happen, so our plans to buy a large motor home to live in full-time fizzled. We thought about it for awhile and then decided to try to have the best of both worlds on a tight budget, hence our travel trailer toy hauler. We plan to live in it 4 to 6 months at a time, basically to escape the Michigan winter....and to fullfill our dreams of exploring this beautiful country, riding our bike as much as possible, go fishing, etc.
As soon as I get the new bed put together, we'll try sleeping in it for a night and then I'll come back here and let you know how it turned out. I'll post pictures on our new travel blog too (adventuresinthewind.blogspot.com)(lots of pics there of how things are coming along so far) If we don't like it, we'll return the items and move on to plan b. Good luck to you. Would like to know what you end up with.
