Cactus Country RV Park off of I-10, Exit 275 is NOT a 55+ park and that is where we spend the winter. Small park of about 250 sites with full hookups and friendly staff. You don't have to wear name tags there since everyone knows each other. PM me if you want more info.

East of Phoenix, in Apache Junction, Mesa, etc. Near the Superstition Mts. which is one of the best winter hiking areas in AZ. everything from easy to strenious. The RV park I stay at has a hiking club that goes out two days a week.

Thank you all so much for your feedback.

It appears that most of the places we are interested in are "first come first serve" with overflow areas just in case. We will likely just drive with a list of places and "wing it". This will be a new strategy for us.

We may even try boondocking in Quartzsite for a night on our way to Kartchner Caverns (hopefully our base location). We are also thinking about Cave Creek or one of the other county parks near Phoenix for a few days. Then, to keep me happy, we will probably do a few nights in Sedona before we head back home.

Any further thoughts would be much appreciated! We look forward to seeing some of you along the way!

What the others have said about the Sedona area at that time of the year is very true.
We went to Cottonwood (just south of Sedona) in Jan of 06 after we left Quartzite.
It was down to 17 degrees at nite.
And when we drove up to check out Jerome, there was snow everywhere.

Ditto on Tucson and South of there.

We loved quartsite and are going again for the third time but Busbee was fun and the airforce base just south of tuscon is great. Also the copper mines near tuscan were great. Liked the casinos allalong the way. Just south of flag are some cave dewelings that were good. If you get near texas rouckhound state park was great for gathering rocks and walking. saw the eclips of the moon their. We always wing it ususlly gone for about seven weeks going into the begining of march

WE try to make an annual trip to southern AZ (from Mesa). Based in Benson area Tucson is available as are Tombstone/Bisbee/Douglas. We especially like Sierra Vista area for the various canyons to explore - and especially Ramsey Canyon Preserve for the birds in spring!!

You mentioned an interest in wineries. This Arizona Wines link will take you to the page for the wineries in southern AZ. They're in the Sonita/Elgin area.

Bisbee is a quaint town with historic buildings, boutique shops, and galleries. Old Bisbee was built on the floors of two canyons and into the canyon walls. It's a great town to do walking tours. Kartchner Caverns and Patagonia Lake are a couple of state parks in southern AZ.

Enjoy,
Neil

Last winter we spent 7 weeks at a ranch sitting job near McNeal Arizona. We were a 20 minute drive to Bisbee or 45 minutes to Sierra Vista. We did a lot of day trips to ghost towns & old west historic sites in the area including Kartchner. Lots of beautiful hiking in the Chiricahua, Mule, & Huachuca mountains. We are heading back to the ranch in a couple weeks for 2 months. We are boondockers by nature so avoid RV Parks but I would recommend Sierra Vista if you are looking for a place to stay with lots to see & do & it's a good jumping off spot for many scenic day trips. You can check out this whole area through our day trips on our website...THE BAYFIELD BUNCH When you get there just check out our archives for the months of February & March of 09. There is a link to our photo albums on the site as well so just click that & find the corresponding dates from Frebruary through March. I have also written about & photographed Borrego Springs, Ca, Quartzite, Az, the Yuma area, Ajo Az & Organ Pipe National Monument, Sedona, Cottonwood, Grand Canyon, etc. etc. We are Canadian snowbirds from Ontario who just love the American Southwest.Feel free to email us with any questions......

I can also recommend Cactus Country. There are a lot of attractions that can be visited in a day, or if you don't mind breaking up your locations, move the RV around a bit and stay at some of the different sites.

Some of the attractions include: Tucson Desert Museum, Kartchner Caverns State Park (great CG too), Bisbee, Tombstone (Tombstone Territories RV Park), Mt Lemon, Pima Air Museum, Titan II Missile Museum, the boneyard (AMARG)at Davis Monthan AF Base (all three of these can be combined into one admission), Saguaro National Park. There is also a lot of great winter hiking around the area. If you are into cycling, it's also great for that.

Enjoy.

Great advice...much appreciated! We will check out Cactus Country for that leg of our trip. Regarding the rest of our stops, I noticed that the non-private campgrounds are first come first serve. With so many snowbirds in that region that time of year, can anyone advise how challenging it might be if we wish to camp at State Parks? We are also considering boondocking in Quartzsite...never done this before. Any additional info. and/or advise would be quite helpful. Thanks!
