I should have said to put the splice in a box.
I am glad you found the problem and didn't have to take too much apart or take it to a dealer.

What if I lap solder the leads together and cover with shrink tube? This may be more reliable than nuts. Or, are you not supposed to solder 120 VAC wires?

Yes, you could twist and solder, then wrap with cushing tape and then heat shrink.
It still should be in a box to prevent a fire if there was a problem.
I would not say that solding is better then wire nuts. On 12 volt stranded wire yes, on 120 volt, solid wire no.

If you have any more of those connectors, I would find them and replace them...don't want your RV burning up.

not supposed to solder solid wire. solder is too soft, can break.

That makes sense not to solder solid wires. So, a metal box, grounded, with wire nut connections. That should be pretty reliable. I have to find a very small box. There is not much room.

I would just zip tie the two wire bundles together tightly and use big wire nuts.

The box does not have to be metal. It can be bakelite. A small box is available
RV stores tht are about 3x2. Should be able to find at many hardware stores. Another option is box for Wiremold or other surface raceways.
