Fishing Bridge or stay at any of the other primitive CG's in the park. Don't waste time commuting from West Yellowstone to the rest of the park. As others have said, about the only thing you'll be doing in your CG is sleeping. Take lots of your own food & supplies; the "trading posts" are very expensive and have a severely limited selection of anything. Take warm clothing and be sure you have enough LP to run your furnace for the duration of your stay. Night-time temperatures in the 30's are common, even in July.
My wife found the numbers for the reservation desks at the campgrounds and went through them rather than the 800 number for the main office and was able to make reservations for Fishing Bridge and I believe Grant within a month of our stay the beginning of Aug. We saw everything from backpackers to 40 foot DPs with toads in both campgrounds. They assign sites by the size of the rig as well as the type of rig (5er, TT, PU, etc.) We had a small site as we're only 28.5 feet and have a small toad (Sidekick) but it was adequate and the GKs played in the forested areas between the loops and had a ball. So here is another vote for staying inside the Park. If you want more info on the numbers she used PM me because I probably won't reread this post. PS; Be as accurate as possible in the length of your rig(s).
OK another question. Im thinking about doing the Grand Tetons to. Im guesing I need a staging area in that park. I will be coming from the South (CA) so probably should do it first. Im headed East after Yellowstone.

We came in from the South Labor Day this year. Went through Logan UT
stayed at Traveland RV Park there. Got to the Tetons and stayed at Colter Bay RV Resort. FHU. They also have a campground right next door, No hookups. Resort is within walking distance of the marina and Jackson Lake. Great place to camp.

We did that basic trip in 2007. We stayed at Colter Bay RV with FHU. You're coming out the way we did basically so for your consideration...first night Beaver UT KOA, second night Idaho Falls, Snake River RV park (we stocked up on groceries at WalMart Super in town)then we went south around the reservoir and came up in thru Jackson.....3rd night Colter Bay....very doable for our crowd....PM me if you need more detail.
BTW, always in your neck of the woods playing kid tournament ball in Chino Hills and West Covina. We often stay at thet newer Hampton off 71.

I have vote for West Yellowstone, we stayed at Grizzley last July for 11 days. The drive in from West entrance was always nice, lots of Elk, Bison and we saw the bald eagle family every day. Never had a line to get into the park, some animal backups but not bad at all. Unlike most, it seems we did spend time at camp, had dinner at our picnic table every night. We enjoyed our nice campsite. We drove thru FIshing Bridge and I was thankful we hadnt tried to stay there. Not my kind of campground.
I would think it best to travel about the park to various campsites to save driving, but I would NEVER drive my motorhome in the park on the narrow twisty roads. YIkes. If you dont mind that part that would be the way to go. Madison looked like a nice campground. Mammoth seemed hot and dusty.
We are going back next Aug, and we want to see the north loop more and will stay at camp outside Gardiner. A bit of a drive to get to the park, but closer to Roosevelt, Lamar Valley and Canyon.
It is all about what you want to do and how you like to travel. Buy all the guidebooks you can and do research on things to do. THe Roosevelt Chuckwagon is the best, we want to do the horse ride next time.
Great info, we're planning a trip that way next September. How late in the year does the park stay open and more importantly the campgrounds. We are planning to be there in the 3rd week of September.

This was the Schedule for this year. Next year will likely be similar.
One thing we did was pack a portable grill & found a different picnic area depending on were we were that day to grill out & eat at night. Our kids enjoyed that & as we drove around during the day they picked out our picnic spot.
