A prime example of what happens when you drink and drive:

Spangler, about 2 in the morning, I hear some god awful inhuman wailing coming from outside. My first thought was that something had happened to one of our older campers. I go outside, and there on the ground in some shirtless dude rolling on the ground and wailing god knows what.
Seems he decided to take his truck out for a little after-dark ride, drunk off his ass and rolled it a couple of miles away from where we were camped. Luckily he was by himself. He didn't take his wife because they had an argument (hmmmmmm, wonder why?), but he did take his two dogs, which are now lost in the desert.
You think his judgement was slightly impaired? Could be.
Police and paramedics were called (he left nice little blood stains on our friends trailer).
Could have been a very bad situation, because the trailer he decided to pound on was heavily armed.
Who else could have gotten hurt?
There are many many times that I decline to go on night runs because I have been drinking after dark. Even though there are few people out where we ride, especially at night, I still refuse to drive because I don't feel capable.
Oh, and by the way, I pick up other's trash while I'm out there, just so you greenies know.

Dune safe and dune smart. I camp with a wild bunch but we keep it in our own camp, protect each other from from one's doing and watch for others not in our group as well. I cant recall how many times we have helped ppl out in the dunes from them being idiotic. Ppl just have to use better judgement and commonsence, which alot lack. I hate that the government has to step in and "protect us" from our own doing..... So, obey the laws, respect the rules and please dont dune drunk...

I wish there were an easy way to self-police this problem. It really sucks when someone rides into camp to say hi and you can tell that they shouldn't be driving. It seems like it happens every trip. It's not so bad when it's someone in your own camp and you can kindly talk them out of their keys. It's still complicated, no matter what.

It just takes a phone call or find and notify a ranger. At least at OW anyway. Yep that was us during Thanksgiving last year. Couldn't believe all the kids riding quads to big for them, without safety gear or helmets, riding double, some with adults, some without and no adult supervision or maybe intoxicated enough not to care. Holidays are the worst for this. It needs to stop so we all who do abide by the laws can enjoy it and walk (crawel, stumble) 50 feet back to our trailer AFTER the riding is done.

DUII is a DUII no matter what they are driving. If there is LEO in range, they will respond to a call on CB9.

I'm no teetotaler, but I have no tolerance for drinking and driving. Just remember ride, then drink... and sober up before riding again.

We've only called 911 once (read Hockydad's account above). But that guy was incapacitated and wasn't going anywhere.

There aren't any LEOs to just flag down where we camp, so it's a big ordeal to get CHP to come out. I wouldn't call them out to track down a drunk in a Rhino who has already left our camp. Ponch & John aren't going to hunt the guy down in the middle of the desert.

I don't think all the troublemakers are in CA, just that the majority of the members on this forum are in CA, so you hear about it more.

I applaud the OP and Dave for setting this up. Our sport of offroading continues to be in the cross hairs on many fronts and the last thing we need is to advertise stupid activity on a public forum.

Additionally we need to police ourselves and those that are not part of organizations fighting to keep our riding areas open. Next time you see some dumb azz doing a stupid stunt please try to reason with them and tell them their actions reflect on all of us and may just shut down the area they are enjoying.

I used to ride in an area that is now closed. It had miles and miles of logging roads and fire trails. I could unload the ATV and the wife and I could ride all day long and never ride the same trail/road twice. We would take cameras with us and shoot pictures of deer and turkey as they were not all that scared of the ATV's. When my son was very young we would load the ATV up and take it out there and ride to our favorite hunting spots. Now they have signs up all over this area that state "NO ATV's or OHV's allowed". Even with the proper off road permits you are still not allowed to ride here anymore.

All this was because there were a few that would not respect the land. They would ride through the creeks and get off of the trails. They destroyed a great place to ride!
