Checking in with the F53 V10 gang. 99 2 valve, 275HP, full Banks and Transcommand with larger K&N air body/cleaner.
Symptom:
Drive rig for about an hour, all up to temperature. Stop for 10-15 minutes with engine off. Go to start and engine will turn over, but will not start. If we wait for 45-60 mins, the engine starts OK and runs well.
This seems to be on hot (for San Diego) days, with humidity (again, for San Diego). It has happened four times now over three years.
I assumed it was vapor lock. But a friend said he thought that a relay/solenoid to the fuel pump, up under the hood, sometimes does not kick in.
I'm familiar, and have replaced before, the relay to the starter. I was not aware of one for the fuel pump?
Anyone hear of this, or does anyone have experience with this and advice on trouble shooting?
Some answers to possible questions:
Good gas, not old, just under a full tank (always fill on return home)
Fuel filter replaced every two years
Generator will work during this time
Engine tuned and all working well, air filter clean and not wet
Scanguage shows no error codes
Yearly full tank with three 20 gal bottles of Techron
Appreciate any advise would be appreciated,
Smitty
UPDATE:
11/1 - Thought I would update the first posting, so it would be current, and all on the info on the first posting:
- I again yesterday, had a problem with the RV not starting, after the first time it started right up. It was only driven about two hundred feet, and was not hot, so don't think it is vapor related (if that is possible with these new systems)
- I took Scotts advise, and bought and replaced the fuel relay. I made the mistake of not trying to start the RV again, before replacing the relay, as it had sat for another two hours. The RV did start after the new relay went in.
- I just called the 1st owner, and he confirmed that the unit has had the fuel pump replaced twice. The last time about 5 years ago. He said that pump was a different version, and that it was suppose to not need to be hit again. (I'll search this some more later. And look thru his receipts to see if I can find the part number of what was put in.)
- Scan Guage does not kick out any error codes.
- I think I'm going to try to stop/start the rig multiple times over the next two days. See if I have any more problems. Hoping the relay was the problem.
We are heading out on Thursday for Prescott and Sedona, so need to get it into the shop if it is the fuel pump. I will call the 800 number on Monday, and ask a few questions.
How about it from those of you with the early V10 F53's, do you think I might need a third fuel pump? Or does the Relay seem like a good candidate. These intermittent problems are the toughest to find, so if I do see a repeat of the problem, I'll hit the fuel pump next. Appreciate any other thoughts or opinions...
Best to all,
Smitty

I had a '94 351CID in a class B that had simular problems. I could drive for hours early in the day. When the heat of the afternoon came into play, the engine would start to miss when I needed power. Shut it off and it would not start for at least an hour. Start off the next day and it would start all over. My problem was the fuel pump not putting out enough pressure. Had it changed and all was fine.
Hey Smitty,
How is ya, Scott here, also another San Diegan. That problem is EXACTLY what we had on our older, first year for fuel injection, class C Ford. It was an 89 E-350 Chassis with a fuel injected 460 in it. We had the problem crop up going 60 mph about 50 miles west of Mesquite NV. Long story short, it was the fuel pump relay and it was originally mounted in the engine compartment in the "WRONG" position. That is, when ever the motor compartment got wet, that relay would hold water and corrode the contacts.
So, When we found out the problem, I replaced it but re-mounted it in such a manor that it would not replay it's problem. I cannot guarantee that this is your problem and, I'm not sure that a relay is still being used in these V-10s. Good luck, and by the way, if you find out what the problem is, please let me or, any one else that's reading this know. Thanks
Scott

Thanks for the posts. They prompted my thought for the month (was getting worried that I would not have one this month!).
The last thing the gent did at the smog check, was take the gas cap off to do the leak down test. When I went to remove it and put it back on at the house, once the rig would not start. It did not seem to 'feel' right coming open. I wonder if he replaced it but did not click it?
I also was thinking back, I have not had a problem for over a 14 months or so now. And, I did get a new gas cap after the previous problem, as my cap was no longer keeping a good seal...
I may have one of the best problems, a non problems...
I will call on Monday to the local Ford Truck dealer, and ask how much does the fuel pump relay cost. If they give me a price, then I know I'll need to track it down. If they say 'What?' - I won't worry about it... If I do find one, I'll clean all of the posts and connections, and check location to be sure it is a good spot (thanks Scott for that 'lesson's learned'...).
And, if I do discover I have a problem, I'll post back.
In the meantime, if anyone else has had similar experience with other solutions, please keep them coming...
Best to all,
Smitty
