I forgot to mention that it looks like I nicked the threads a little diggig it out, does any one know what size tap I need to dress them up.

I THINK its a 1 inch NPT. I would bet any nearby machine shop would have what you need and let you borrow it, or at least charge a nominal fee.
I wouldnt go out and buy a tap just to chase threads one time.

An Atwood is 3/4 national pipe thread. I would get a pipe plug in black iron to chase the threads. It is much cheaper then a tap.

If you are talking about the drain plug in a Atwood water heater, it is a 1/2" National Pipe Thread. Granted the opening is nearly 3/4" in diameter, but it is NOT a 3/4" NPT. Pipe sizing is based on the inside diameter, and not the outside diameter.

to be on the safe side I'll get a new plug 1st and compare it to the pipe size. thanks again for all the great information.

if youre going to buy a plug buy one with anode:



bought one like this and fitted ok at the instant...dont forget the PTFE tape!
