@ REDWAKE - iTunes is the easiest way to use an iPod or iPhone. In fact, with an iPhone, I am not sure there is any other way. Pod Cast are easy to use & get on the iPod/iPhone. If you like linux, try Mac OS, you will be pleasantly surprised. It is Unix based.
@ BUMPY - check the settings or preferences. You should be able to burn a CD then take that CD and make duplicates. I like Roxio Toast for that task.

MAC OS isn't free... or has that changed?
back to my question... clicking the hyperlink isn't an option? right now i have an non active version of XP i'm using to convert my existing music when/if it expires i won't have itunes.
it seems like i may be able to get away with not activiating it by adjusting the calandar on the affected computer.
(disclamer for those of you that think i'm a pirate, i'm not the computer came with XP installed on it strait from HP, however the XP install CD and the key on the computers sticker dont mate. so when the HD crashed and i tried to re-install doesn't work... call microsoft to ask them what's going on they want $70 to talk to me) refuse to buy something i already own 2 licenses for but won't accept and i refuse to pay some one to fix their problem i'd rather just yell at them and hang up like i did.

Nope, Mac OS isn't free, nor are the computers that run it. Free doesn't = better.
I understand when you own a PeeCee, you are basically stuck with either Windows or Linux.
Also, you do not have to "activate" or use "keys", with Mac OS, you buy it, install it, and use it. Clean, easy & simple.

redwake wrote: hopefully yall dont take this as a hijack but it is on the same topic... i just ordered my iphone 3g should be here in a few days. i am a fan of adam carolla's i listen to his podcast regularly which from my computer i can download the .mp3 directly from his website...
will i be able to just click the link on my ipod from safari and it will play it? i was kind of assuming this would work but this thread makes me wonder.
it doesn't look like i will have a computer with itunes on it for long because i as the minority do run linux and from what i've read on wine support its a real headache to get to run you have to use alternate applications.
After the phone is activated with an account ( I believe Itunes is REQUIRED for this) you can down load material from the itunes store where all the music podcast movies etc are directly to the phone. I have to say though without itunes your iphone experience will not be very good .. how will you update it fix it if for some reason it locks up??? You need Windows or Mac OSX ...I cant see it being much more than a phone without the media control i get ..I drive 500 miles a night and I subscribe to Adams FREE weekly hour long podcast also (most all Podcasts are FREE !! ) with I tunes. and it downloads and maintains my library of over 30 podcasts every day when I dock it to My computer.linux users pay a price too!!! .. a LOT of "stuff" doesnt work- Good luck without it.

The PC version will make you a MP3 CD IF you ripped the songs in MP3 format. iTunes default rips songs in AAC (MP4), which is a superior format BUT hardly anything plays it. iTunes will convert all your AAC tunes to MP# but now you have two copies of every sone; one AAC and one MP3.
Try this, when you click BURN a pop up windows appears. Then select the option to make a MP3 cd...
BTW, most NEW music players play AAC, not protected songs , but unprotected AAC.

My songs that I downloaded from Itunes would not play on my car machine. no doubt the wrong format as stated. But now that I already have them downloaded onto my computer, can I convert them somehow? If not, can you download them in MP3 format originally from Itunes?
Perhaps it would be easier to download using some other program, any suggestions?

Well you can tell itunes to save new downloads as almost any file AAC ,MP3 , apple lossless etc Most music sold at itunes is no longer DRM'ed so you can do what you want with it. You can also convert your old DRM music that was bought to non DRM (for a price) but even the DRM music can be burned to a Audio CD
Most Car CD players CANT READ MP3 ! so if your burning a mp3 file to a cd in many players its useless! that I think is your problem . older car stereos can only read a AUDIO file ... when you create a playlist or song list Right click to the menu, select burn to disk and select Audio CD NOT MP3! Good luck
For those of you that don't like to buy from itunes but dont mind using the itunes organizer for your ipod etc. you know you can buy from Amazon and it will import into itunes. No $ to steve

OK, my car will play MP3s so that isn't the issue. I got some message like 'incompatible music format" or somesuch. I have the CD with AACs burned on it and want to convert them somehow. If I download any more I will try the right click procedure.
thanks,

I love iTunes. Can't understand why anyone wouldn't. Oh well...to each his/her own.
