Back in the mid 90's I towed a 21 ft Jayco 5th wheel trailer with a reg cab short box Dodge Dakota. I wish I knew the bed size right about now. Fast forward 15 yrs.

Currently I have a super crew 09 F150 with the 5'6" box. I figured a 5th wheel was out since I couldn't find any like the Jayco was. The Jayco had the extended tongue on it so that is why I could get away with it on the Dakota. The hitch I had was non sliding.

I'm not really finding a ton of floor plans I like in the travel trailers. I came across the Nash website and I was amazed to find the same floor plan and layout of my Jayco.

I know this truck will tow it better then the Dakota did. The Dakota was fine but I was slightly overweight or right at the weight limit.

With the Ford I can tow 9800ish pounds. My concern is the 5'6" bed. Can this be done? I know now they make the sliding 5th wheel hitch which should help when backing up. The Nash has the extended hitch which is the only reason I think they may work. If this was the standard 5th wheel style I wouldn't even think about it. Here is a link to the trailer.

I think I may be out of luck. If I recall my dakota was a 1992. I did a quick search and a short box regular cab box was listed as a 6'5" box. That's a foot bigger then what I have now.

I really can't imagine being able to tow a fith wheel with a Supercrew F150. The bed is just way too short. If you get the SuperCab instead, you can get a long bed or a standard length short bed instead of the super short Supercrew short bed.

Already own the super crew so I have what I have. At first I thought it was doable since I did it with the Dakota. I'm still having a hard time beliving that the box was 6.5 ft but I guess it was. They do make a 6ft box for the super crew but for around here it was an order out and I didn't think much of it at the time since I had no plans on a 5th wheel trailer when I bought the truck.

I know the make a super slider hitch, but having gone down that route before buying the current TT I figured that the 5'6" bed is too short. I was kicking myself for not buying the supercrew with the longer bed!

Just wait a little bit longer and you will find some on here that do it with the Chevy 1500 Crew cab with the 5.5 ft bed and the Ford also. What you have to do is measure the hitch pin to the corner of the camper. If that is shorter than the pin hole in the hitch to the corner of your cab you will be fine for a 90 degree (jackknife). If it is longer. Sundance makes a 5er with a custom nose cap that makes it easier to use a standard 6.5 bed without a slider. One like that and a slider may make it possible to use a 5.5 short be. If you can't make a full 90 you will have to be careful of tight spots. I have needed to slide mine a few times to get a full 90 turn to get my 5er in a spot.

The TT would make things much easier.

Fifth wheel is easy with a 5.5' bed. Just watch the pin weight. My dry pin is 880 and probably 1250 loaded. A fifth wheel close to 10,000 pounds will have too much pin weight. For that size a TT might work but think 8000 GVWR or less for a fifth wheel.

Superglide hitch that moves about 2' is made special for the 5.5' bed. Others tow with a manual slider and seem to do fine but you are going to be sliding back rather frequently.

I believe this model fifth wheel with 7000 gvwr and 770 dry pin will work great.

I wonder why Ford would bother making both a 5'6" bed and a 6' bed. Seems they would just pick one size and make only one, since 6 inches isn't much difference in bed length, not like the difference between 6' and 8'.

Does the 6' bed model have a longer wheelbase than the 5'6" bed model, or do they just add 6 inches more bed length behind the axle? If the wheelbase is the same, then the hitch to cab distance will still be the same for both beds.

Sorry after typing it and now reading it they make a 5 1/2 foot and a 6 1/2 foot bed in the super crew format.
