I was wondering how many of you, especially with the Powerstroke 6.0 are using an oil filter bypass system. It comes highly recommended at www.powerstrokehelp.com I just bought my truck, and I'll be using it mainly to pull my 13k 5ver. Any suggestions or comments on using one is welcome. It looks like it would cost just under 1000.00 to buy it, and have it installed professionally. Do you think the cost is justified?

I didn't do the oil bypass filter but i did put the coolant bypass system in. It too is highly recommended to help keep the ERG system clear of debris and the cost is much less. From what I have read, any of the current diesels, could benefit from a coolant bypass filtration system.

The 6.0 really chews up the oil. The way the injection system works it is really hard on oil.
I personally would not go by-pass on a 6.0. Some of the other diesels, sure, but the 6.0 is a no no.

I would run the oil up to 5 to 7K and have Blackstone do a report on it and see what's left on your favorite oil.

The oil bypass is next on my list and they are a must on the 6.0. This is where you get it as recommended on Powerstrokehelp.com
http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/bf.aspx
Do the preferred comstomers for $10.00 and save 25% on your order and you can do the install yourself with a cost of about $500.00, here is the one that I am going to order. http://www.amsoil.com/bypassfilters/2006_f350_powerstroke.pdf
The main thing is to get the soot out of the oil. This filter system is a must.I would never go over 5000 miles on an oil change and I do send my samples into Halton, I have for over 12 years on my PSD and never a bad sample. If you have any questions on this just PM me.

Thanks, I may just take you up on that. I just changed the oil, so I think I'm going to do on the next oil change at 5k miles. I just sunk a bunch of money into this truck just making sure all the maintenance is up to snuff at 54k miles. But I think this is something I'm definately going to do.

I run one on my 6.0, not for extended oil changes but for better filtering. Mine is from Oilguard & was way less than $1000.00. Shop around.

Why no bypass on a 6.0?

Like I said, the HPOP really shears up the oil. That 40 grade oil you put in your 6.0 will soon be 30 then 20 weight. It has nothing to do with filtering. This engine really shears the oil up.

By-pass filtering works great, but the 6.0 just beats the begesus out of the oil. The oil really looses it's viscosity in this engine. Pretty soon you have WD-40 lubing your bearings.

Check out this link:

Not really a good one but it talks about shearing. If you really want to know about shearing type in 6.0 diesel and shearing in Google.

IMHO you can really clean your oil with a by-pass filter but that won't help the shearing problem one bit.
