Just another thought on this subject. Take a tape measure and stretch it out to 78 inches, the estimated life expectancy of a North American male. Put your finger on the number that matches your age, "52". Look at how much time you have left if in fact you reach the average age. How does retirement look now?

Good One!!!

I hate the tape measure test......

I'm 77 1 inch to go; man O man O man. My mother was 96 when she passed' maybe I'll get lucky.

I am suprised how few people were concerned with health care when retiring in their fifties. It can be extemely expensive, espeically if you have pre-existing conditions. It seems to me that it almost impossible to not have some sort of pre-existing condition working for 40 years in the corporate pressure cooker of the last decade or two.

I am fortunate to have quaranteed and modestly supported healthcare in retirement but even so, it is close to 1000/mo. Like others, I had an opportunity for an significant incentive with only 4 months to 65 and Medicare which was a major factor.

I have been retired now for 60 days and thought I was going to drop doing everything I had been waiting to do for so long! LOL. So far it is great having Saturday every day. ( Don't tell my DW as she finishes up her last year teaching.)

Looking forward to longer trips next summer...who knows...maybe even a warm winter sometime in the future.

I don’t think the doctors and nurses are going to be working for free. Since the tooth fairy doesn’t exist, all that can happen is that the costs will be transferred. Right now about half of the American working people pay income taxes and about half don’t. I would expect that once again the taxpayer will be picking up the tab for the people who will get their healthcare for free. With the cost of RV’s and RV’ing, I would expect that almost all RV’ers fall into the taxpaying class and taxes will be going up to pay for the trillion dollar plus bills. When the government says, “Oh we will just tax the insurance companies drug companies, and medical devise companies.” remember each and every dollar of these taxes will eventually be paid for by the consumers and taxpayers. The Medicare cuts in the five congressional bills are between a low $400,000,000,000 and a high of $575,000,000,000. I think anybody expecting to get “FREE” healthcare is going to be sorely disappointed. The cost will be going down for some and the cost will be going up for some. I expect it will be going up for most on this board.

I'm surprised at how many folks retired in their 50's.

I was going to retire at 62 but stayed on another year to finish out a large contract that worked out to my advantage. Laid off at the end of the contract at age 63 with with a good severance and COBRA plus I drew unemployment only worry was DW's health insurance.

My job required a lot of air travel and I sure as heck don't miss that, I'll travel by RV over airlines any day.

Great to see so many retire in the 55 range. Actually I don't want to retire so much as I just want to be able to afford to change my career from the rat race job to something I enjoy doing... just that things I enjoy doing don't pay much. But figure if your working your not spending so...

I couldn't wait to retire and have had no regrets. I was counting down the last 2 years, day by day. I could not retire until age 55 but on that date - BAMM I was gone. I worked for Uncle Sam for 37 years and that was long enough.

I've been retired for 18 months and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Wow, some great comments!

I had an opportunity a couple years ago to sell my business and retire (I am 53) and I did not pursue it since I was afraid to retire. My dad died at 44, his dad at 42, his uncle at 39, all of heart problems. I know a couple people, including a great man that I did some surveying in Alaska with. He retired and was dead in two weeks. So I was afraid to. I started milking cows at 5 and never not worked.

Unfortunately the business is now worth about 33% of what it was, our portfolio was down 52%, and our real estate about 20%. I bitterly regret missing the opportunity now.

We will have to work several more years, but hopefully we can pull the plug soon. A gentleman I have gotten to know on these boards, Avan, suggested we pick a date and we retire then, and we go with what we have in the bank at that time. You will never have enough. He is right. That day is 753 days from now. The business will go on the market in 653 days, no matter what.

My wife will be a retired 06 then. We will have Tricare, her pension, hopefully the house and RV (probably a Tiffin Allegro Bus) paid for, and some amount in the bank. Whatever amount it is. We are going to do it. Thanks Avan.

To that gentleman who suggested laying out the tape - thank you. I did it and just about had to go to the bathroom. I also looked at 39, 42, and 44 inches. Gives one something to think about.

As for my fear of not going to work, I will carry my tools and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity again. I can do it. I just have to convince myself!
