It has turned cool here and our little guy was freezing all of the time unless he was here.

So I bought him a sweater and he really loves it

My question is do you leave the sweater on all of the time? take it off at night or what?
When I take his off he will get it and lay with it and when I pick it up he puts his head in it for me to put in on him.
This is the first dog I have ever had which needed clothing, lol
thank for your replies

I don't like to leave sweaters, etc., on maggie all night. Afraid they will twist up and choke or put a leg in a bind, etc. She sleeps in a small crate at night and has a "frisbee" looking disk that is heated in the microwave, then I put it under her pillow and it keeps her warm all night. you can get them at Pet stores for about $20 now - I pd $40 for hers out of a catalog when they first came out - she is 6 yrs old and it still works like a charm.

I'd never leave a sweater on the dog overnight....
Let him sleep under the covers at night.....it'll help keep both of you warm

The heating blanket and such are OK, but you should be able to keep the dog warm by supplying a crate with blankets, as I'm assuming that you don't keep your house at 45-degrees at night. Even a Chihuahua should be able to keep warm if there is enough blankets to cuddle under.

thanks guys,
He does sleep with us at night and under the covers. I was worried he might be to warm with the covers and the sweater both. I have also worried about him getting a leg caught or something.

I find that my dog's short spikey coat pulls the sweater down and it wants to slip off her shoulders as she sleeps, so I don't normally leave it on her at night. I think she's more comfortable just covered up with a blanket.

We have two dogs, one is a husky mix and loves the winter cold and hates the summer heat. The other is a pit mix and is the complete opposite as his sister. He is pretty much a huge wuss when it comes to cold. I don't leave his jacket on him all the time, but we do put a fleece blanket over him at night. I saw this and have been thinking about getting it for him this winter.
As far as them getting to hot under the blankets, I am always amazed at how much he likes to stuff his whole head under things like pillows, blankets, and me. I know I'd be to hot under there, but he seems to like it!!

We left Dewey's sweater on him for over a week - but that was because we were using it to cover some stitches instead of the cone. He sleeps in a crate and even so, there were a few mornings he got up wearing a skirt instead of a sweater. I'd take it off at night.

Two of our rat terriers love to wear the sweaters too. When I pull ou the sweaters they immediately come and stick their heads right in and stand real still until I get them situated. They've obviously figured out that life is much warmer in a sweater.

We never leave them on at night however, there have been too many instances where they have gotten a let hung up in one and I would hate for that to happen when I can't see it right away. Ours have wool/fleece horse blankets in their crates to lay on, and fleece blankets to crawl under. I buy fleece fabric remnants at the fabric store since they're cheap and can be cut to any size.

I have to admit..... on cold nights I let them all sleep with me and they all crawl under the blankets. They put out lots of heat and keep me toasty warm all night. Do you remember the saying about "it's a 3 dog night"? I think we're having one of those tonight with snow/freezing rain on it's way to Minnesota!

Just wanted to thank you guys for the help. We are now removing his sweater at night and only putting it on in the day when he seems to be shivering, High today is only supposed to be 59 degrees so I think it will be an all day sweater day, lol
