I will be done in Arizona soon, and will be crossing the border to Los Algodones for my medications. My question is will I need a Script from my DR. or just a list of meds. How much can I bring back into the US at a time, I have heard 3 months and 6 months.

Thanks, Kevin

Can't answer about quantity but several years ago we bought some Zantac in Algodones for some friends. Did not have anything in writing. There was a sign at the U.S. border station saying you needed a prescription if you were bringing drugs into the U.S. We did not have any such thing and were not asked for it when we had to declare what we were bringing into the country. That was pre 9/11 so don't know if anything has changed since.

I was there, got my drugs and I was never asked for the prescription. I did have my meds with me from the states to match up what I was buying. On person in front of me was question and refused entry into the US. It turns out your only allowed to bring 100 pill bottles, her's was in a four hundred count bottle, she had to go get four 100 pill bottles. Oh well... Bill

Note my wife is the nurse, when she found out what I paid, she took her meds with her and got everything refilled, a fraction of what she would have paid in the US.

On edit: Remember there is a big difference between narcotics and prescription drugs. A control drug, like for depression is a hole different ball game.

They don't want more than a 3 month supply to be brought over at a time.

We wintered twice in border places. Do a lot of homework. There were horror stories almost daily. The drug cartels have put a whole different light on what you may want to do. You must weigh the risks.

We have purchased prescription drugs and had dental work done in Los Algodones for the last 4 years and it's as safe as Yuma. There are no horror stories about Algodones; it's safe.

I've purchased 3 and 6 months worth of meds but no controlled substances. If you want a controlled substance then you meet with a doctor on premises at the pharmacy and he writes a prescription and you can have it filled. Ask the people at the pharmacy about how many months you can take back to the U.S. or ask the border people when you cross into Mexico. Some controlled substances such as Ativan and Valium can be bought over the counter.

Enjoy your day in Los Algodones, do some shopping and have lunch. Lindy

Thanks for all the answers to my questions. There does not seem to be much of a problem, but I just was not sure. Kevin

If I may pop in here, when you say at a fraction of the price what might that be? Is there a place whre you can get actual pricing before going there? Some examples would be great. My wife is on 11 different scrips and since losing the job and even with cobra it is still mighty expensive. Thanks!

Steve,

It probably won't save you enough to pay for a trip from Michigan. but in most cases the price in Mexico will be 40-60% of the US price. Some generic medicines are available there which are not sold in the US and in those cases it may cost as little as 25% of what the name brand does here.

Thanks for the info Kirk. We do spend some time in the Southwest, never in Yuma yet though. If we make it to that area maybe we'll take a trip South to Mexico and see what it's all about. Again Thanks!!
