Recently had my mh pulling to the right and smelled like brake was overheating. Took it to a repair shop and they changed the front calipers and pads, machined the rotors and blead the system. After test driving they said the rear should be checked also. I declined since I needed to be home that evening. Total bill over $700.00 which included 5 hrs of labor. Major problem I had I was in and out in less then 3 hrs. Tech also had lunch during the time. After asking about the labor charge they stated that was out of flat rate computer program or some thing of that nature. On the invoice he also noted that I still had a rear brake issue and he advised me of the risk of not taking care of it. I did not have any problem going home but I did have them checked, and this shop said they found nothing wrong.

Labor charges are in man/hours, not clock hours. How many people worked on your job?.

I owned an auto repair shop and my tech's worked on flat rate, if a jog called for 5 hrs, the customer was billed for 5 hrs, if it was done in 3 the tech wins, if it takes 7 the tech still gets paid the flat hours, the garage or the tech does not assign the flat hours, we used either the manufactuer or chiltons to figure the hours...all dealerships and most garages work the same way...

Almost all shops have what they call labor book hrs. That is, your vehicles make and year should take X amount of hours to do. But they ad additional time for rotor replacement or re-surfacing, caliper overhaul, wheel re-packing.
Just go into any RV shop, they usually have there shop Hr rate posted. The one by me is $105 Hr. and usually there is a minimum charge, even if the job only took 15 Min.
So it is best to shop around, BUT many times it is an emergency type repair, thus you are at there mercy. But $700 does sound steep for only front brakes.

I just had front calipers replaced on my Superduty truck and it was 550.00 for just the calipers and labour. I had just done rotors and pads and they were still good. You had pads added on to that and a rotor turning as well. Doesn't seem out of line to me.

Sounds reasonable- flat rate is flat rate- you "win" some, you "loose" some. As to the rear brakes, they recommended you have them inspected, which you did.

Have an acquaintance who is a auto mechanic and he says they get paid extra if they get the job done in less time then the computer says. In your example the mechanic will get a bonus for completing a 5 hour task in 3 hours. Now on the opposite side if the mechanic takes longer the mechanic gets docked against the bonus. Encourages the mechanics to work faster and get more work through the shop. Either way you will pay the computer or shop manual rate for the repair.

Happy Trails
