Yes indeed. As more users are added to AT&T the speed slows down. I'm very pleased overall with AT&T and use it for my home service after cancelling DSL. Of course I have the old, really unlimited, data plan and use every bit of it and more.

Are you sure that you still have an unlimited plan? Ours was unlimited and we haven't changed it since 2005 but now at the top of the Data Used
page it's now marked as - Data Connect 5GB
We still have our original plan but we have renewed it and upgraded the card which may be why it's now 5GB.

We have used AT&T since 1991 (Bell South Mobility then Cingular now AT&T) and like the first OP stated, their service is great in populated areas but spotty where we like to camp. We have a SPRINT air card and have been places where it worked great and the cell phone didn't. I think we will stick with this combo.

Just went threw this with AT&T. Took some very serious conversations with customer service and and higher ups. We transferred our air card to our cell phone account so we would get only one bill. I was assured that all things would stay the same including unlimited MB. Took over a month of calls. Account is back to Unlimited MB. Best way to avoid AT&T switching to a 5GB account is purchase your own air card.

Nope, they wouldn't/couldn't do it. What I was told, and I bet each rep has a different story, is that too many were on the unlimited and doing movies and setting up router or sharing Thus the cap.

I agree with the OP. We bought an AT&T air card in Florida and it almost never worked once we got further north. It worked fine in our driveway, but didn't work one time on trips to New Jersey, mid-Pennsylvania, Maryland (north and south), West Virginia, or most places outside the DC area in Virginia. We ended up fighting them to get out of the contract and then started using our Verizon phone tethered to the laptop. It has ALWAYS worked and has worked well, even in the areas that AT&T wouldn't work... even in the boonies. We turn it off and on whenever we need it, even for one day, and for all weekend and longer trips. Outstanding service at a reasonable price (<$2 per day!).

Quote: Often I have to go so far as to unplug the 875U air card to get running again. This happens in both 2G and 3G and is location dependent. One guys I work with has the 875. I tether and he uses his Sierra 875 side-by-side and my tethered phone is great and his 875 is horrible. It may not be AT&T's fault. My coworker is dropping his aircard and going to a tethered iPhone and saving $60/month as a bonus.

What kind of antenna do you have I want to install one for my sprint air card

Most people use the Wilson Trucker antenna along with a Wilson Amplifier and then have adaptors for the air card and cell phone.
They work well but are a little pricey.
As far as I can see with ATT, when they did the deal with Apple and signed up 2 million iPhones using 3G it was not going to improve their network. Now that people have found a way to tether their iPhones to their laptops that's not going to help either.
My experience was that Sprint was far faster than ATT which tends to be spotty performance wise - you get a burst of data and then it sits doing nothing, then another burst - signs of a congested network.

My 2 cents worth.
I had Cell One because they were the only ones with coverage at my home. Never had a problem with phone or aircard, traveling all over the country. They had great roaming agreemants with other companies so there was never a dead area. Never any roaming fees either. AT&T bought out CellOne. I had to buy a new aircard because they switched the towers near the house to another technology (?). I'm currently in Maine and spent three hours on the phone with tech support because I was connecting to the tower but could not get internet. Finaly the second tech I talked to admitted they did not have any towers near me but that I was accessing them thru a 'partner agreement'. Wonderful signal strength, but the tower would not connect to the internet. I had to uninstall and reinstall all of my aircard software, and now I might get dropped on a whim, or maybe not connect at all.
Am I pleased? Give me back CellOne!
