If your MH is like mine the cable for the sat on the roof is under what looks like a vent cap on the roof over copilot side of the roof. There will be a extra cable behind the tv.
If you research this topic...with regard to the rooftop units, there seem to be many problems. From moisture (rain) on the protective dome (stopping the signal) to dependability (breaking down) to technical things...like system updating as mentioned above.
Personally...I have the primitive...but always working....tripod, dish, strength meter and compass. And...I connect it into the (external) cable jack. The picture is just fine. It all goes thru my passive switchbox. I don't care about hi-def. I don't have any of the "sport packages" or any of the pay things like Showtime or HBOs. When on satellite, both TVs must be on the same channel. Not a problem. Might be, somehow, for others, but not us.
Once I'm out of the "spot beam", I lose the networks (ABC,NBC,CBS, etc) but that's OK. If I'm that far away...I just put up the antenna, push "ANT" on the switchbox and I get the local channels. All the other channels (CNN,FoxNews,History,Discovery, etc., etc.), come in just fine. Just push the "SAT" button on the switchbox.
At the stick house, I have my satellite system and two boxes. I just take one of the boxes, put it in the RV and I'm good to go. Tell the satellite provider nothing (they'll want to charge you extra...for what?)...and just pay your bill on time.
Y'don't want to make things more complicated then they have to be. The tripod, dish, compass and strength meter costs under $150. At worst,10 minits to aim the thing. And I never use the dish for overnighters. The roof-top units go for about $1500. Enough said.
Of course, I'm not full timing in the RV, I do snowbird, however...but for the amount of time I WATCH television (unlike some RVers, I DO go outside most of the time)...that $1500 simply isn't worth it.
Your call.
The sat cable is located on roof under a vent pipe cap near passenger seat and in coach in the cabinet that had cd, tv switcher box. I have a 2008 George town. I installed a Winguard 1000 travler. it takes say 10 minutes to lock into sats. Its a learning curve as CW ask if i had the sat reciever and of course I use it at home and so they installed one new cable as they said if they guarnteed thier work then they put in one new cable. In working with wineguard I found that I needed 2 cables to recieve 2 channels at a time, long story I have only one cable at home, so I thought that one would work. wrong. I installed 2 more new ones my self using the same hole the first one was in, sealed up all holes and so forth. Note I relocated tv swicher and the new winguard box to front cabinet as there was too much heat in cabinet. Now I need to put 12vdc fan to cool cabinet. Ps the reason I did't use the factory cable ad I would have a barrell connector which is a connection to get moisture in and cause problems. Next to get better HD picture I now need to run a Hdmi cable from DVR to TV. Ok down the road when I get a chance. Happy camping.
Camping World installed a stationary Winguard Dome on our new then '06 Knight. Works every time there are no trees in the way. We have Direct TV and just use a control box and remote from the stick home, so no extra charges.
In April I was in the same situation. I got really tired of putting up a tripod, dish, and aiming etc. I also wanted something that when I pulled into a place for a quick overnight stop I could watch the channels I like. I researched all of the options and ended up choosing the Vuqube 3000. The 3000 was very new a the time, so I had very little reviews available, but here are a few reasons I made the choice I did:
1. I did not have to cut into my roof.
2. I was able to do the install myself with the ladder mount.
3. I can remove and get a signal if there are obstructions.
4. The 3000 has in motion, so the family can enjoy while on the road.
5. If I decide to trade or sell, I can easily remove and put on another rv.
The price almost made me decide on a roof top unit, but I found the vuqube on sale online, so the price including the flex install ladder mount kit was about the same as the roof top unit with installation. Hope this helps.
Yea that's kind of the way I am leaning now, VuQube 3000 for the reasons you stated above. I noticed after reading the ins. instructions that the ladder mount has an adhesive on one of the brackets that attach to the Motorhome. Does it seem like that will be able to come off later or is the bracket pretty much permanently attached to the M/H?
I have a VU Qube that I purchased over a year ago and it does a nice job especially where there are trees around. . .I was concerned about it growing legs, so I just bring it in at night or when we are going to leave the park & leave the cable on the ground. . .then when I bring the Qube back out, I set it in the same place where the cable is and don't have to touch any adjustments. One thing for sure, it beats the heck out of setting up the tri pod especially in lousy weather.
