This is an interesting source of information about the Yukon and other parts of the Great North Land. My buddy Craig Nold sent me this URL as the Up Here publication had done an article on the old roadhouses of the Alaska Hwy and Craig knew they were an interest of mine. http://www.uphere.ca/ I am sure there are many more such information sources, that others have, and can share the site addresses, hopefully.
Here is a summer of 2009 photo of downtown Whitehorse, corner of Main and 2nd(?) streets, I think.
Sure have civilized that town a bunch in the last 20 years or so. Still a favorite place to spend a few days on the way to or from Alaska.

Just finished looking at the magazine. The roadhouse story seems pretty sad to me. We used to stop often for those famous cinnamon buns and Johnson's Corner was one of the best! One must wish those new owners all along the Road good luck in maintaining their history!
Another subject - the farley Mowat article also raised memories. In 1965, while on and aerial survey of trees along the treeline for the Canadian Forestry Research service we landed at Windy Point on neultin Lake. Somewhere in my archives I have a photo of the ruins of Mowat's cabin!
Great memories - especially of the graylings from the Enntiat River!
To bad we can't take the RVs into that country! Check the map in my sig. That one white spot is Nunavut!

Thanks for the link Joe. I am always interested in North Country history etc. My first introduction to AK was in 1968 for fishing in South East at Petersburg. I was 35 at the time. Things have certainly changed since then.

Yes it is Main and 2nd. There is another Starbucks down by the big box area.
It does seem as though main street has managed to survive and thrive.
When I first came here that was the only stoplight in the territory.
Thanks for posting the link to Up Here.
joe..hey, come on man...couldn't you at least find a picture with a maple leaf or moose and not a Starbucks, front¢re? Maybe a parka? wolf? repair shop, maybe?
