I took Champ to the vet today because the diarrhea is still recurring, despite dietary changes and dosing with Spastolate. My vet asked detailed questions about the diarrhea and Champ's diet and medication schedule, and how he's been acting during the time he's had this. So, he prescribed Azulfidine, a sulfa drug that's used to treat colitis. He explained that the diarrhea was caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in Champ's colon, and the Spastolate was not stopping the diarrhea because it was not getting to the root of the problem. He believes the Azulfidine will stop the diarrhea and suggested that I keep him on his regular diet and not use the Spastolate unless it's absolutely necessary. He said it should be better by the end of this week, and I have to keep him on this for 2-3 weeks. Champ lost 2 pounds - he weights 21 pounds now, but the doctor said he looks good and that he should recover nicely in time.
So, I feel better, and I think Champ will too .

Rita we had an uphill battle with Colitis in our older dog Tucker. After different meds and sleepless nights with worry it was suggested to me to give him a High Fibre Diet dog food and of all things Pumpkin.
Tucker had such bad Colitis that started in July and it has been about a month now with no more diarrhea and blood in his stools.
Tucker now gets Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul Diet dog food. It contains 8% Fibre and along with that he also gets Pumpkin puree mixed in with it. The pumpkin puree is 3% fibre and its all natural. Within 5 days the bloody diarrhea disapeared. His stools are soft and he actually has fewer bowel movements per day where as before he was going every time he went outside.
Thought I would share what i have learned dealing with Colitis in my dog. Now all three of our pups get pumpkin every day and no ill effects on any of them. It might be worth a try.
