We all get the flu shot and have ever since my husband at then 42 yrs. old and our daughter then 12 BOTH collapsed within days of each other from dehydration and fever from the flu even though they were taking in liquids, gatorade (electrolytes) and soup, etc. That was terrifying to have to come like that. I first thought hubby was having a heart attack and when my daughter collapsed I just started screaming because she wasn't responding to me...so yes flu shots in this family! Swine flu, yes, I'm not taking any chances. It's been created within the same "formula" as the current flu vaccine and is inactive. I wouldn't ever take the nasal form for myself or kids though. If your concerned about your children ask your doctor to make sure that their swine flu vaccine does not contain thimerosal which is a mercury preservative and many have long felt that this preservative is what may have contributed to reactions in children. Our pediatrician ordered the vaccine without that preservative as she quite frankly does not trust it. She also orders the regular flu vaccine without the preservative in it. So I rely on her advice regarding that. If she says she wouldn't give it to her own kids with it in it, then that's good enough for me.
O.K....This is VERY good info!....When the vaccine, not spray, becomes available in my area, I will ask if it contains the preservative........Thanks!

You DID make it clear - no need to apologize to anyone. And agree with your posts 100%. Doctors can, and do, make mistakes and when it comes to our health, I think it's wise to do our own research in addition to speaking with our doctor.

Can't say that I plan to, don't get the regular flu vaccines either. Already been exposed to confirmed cases of the Swine flu for extended periods of time by accident riding the Coast Starlight back from a convention in Portland a couple months ago.

I wound up with a mild head cold for about a week and that was it. But, then I drink a pint of orange juice or grape juice every morning before taking my multi-vitamin and I sleep a minimum of 8 hrs a night.

Last time I had the regular flu was back when I was in high school and marching band (Sometime in the early 90s, probably 1993). I tend to have a great propensity towards getting Bronchitis once every 2-3 years vs anything else that needs an actual doctors visit (hence why I get extra refills on my antibiotics when I go in, in the event I get it again before the pills go bad, $5 drug vs $120 doctors visit to get $5 drug).

Ask your Doctor that is most important. H1N1 seems to mostly target young healthy youths. Now I am writing as a parent not a medical professional,my son will darn well get the vaccine,as well as myself and my spouse. Every families case is different but I would not trust my families life's to something I have heard on this forum.

We have a friend whose daughter is dying from the Swine Flu. She was 8 months pregnant when she caught the Swine Flu. They took the baby and baby is doing fine, but the mother's organs shut down and has been in a coma for the past 2 months. I hope your daughter thinks twice about getting the H1N1 shot.

Some sad stories in this thread.

I enjoy gambling as much as the next guy but I'll never understand gambling with one's life, especially given the proven track record of flu shots.

I cannot understand why so many people distrust the medical community and their government.
Why is it felt that these bodies are plotting to get you?

People who are friends and misunderstand one another treat each other with respect. I appreciated my friend's Julie's post with or without an apology but as friends she offered one, very nice.

No one said anything about anyone "plotting to get" anyone. I don't know where that comes from.

I'll not apologize for being proactive when it comes to my healthcare or that of my family. I do not blindly listen to doctors, just as I don't blindly listen to anyone else. There is NO reason to NOT question your doctor. If your doctor doesn't like being questioned, then I'd really question the care you're getting from said doctor.

As I said before, we've dealt with a LOT of doctors in the past. When it came time for Greg's transplant, the doctor sat down with us for over an hour. He TOLD me to bring a tape recorder to record the conversation. He said that way, we can transcribe it and re-read it for further clarification. Also, we may have more questions that pop up after we've had time to digest the consultation. Now THAT is a GREAT doctor! Not only did he ENCOURAGE questions, but he was confident enough in himself and his abilities that he WANTED us to RECORD our consult! You can't ask for a better doctor than that!

Another of Greg's doctor's, when I asked if I could record the visit so I could remember his answers to my questions said ABSOLUTELY NOT. Why not? Afraid we could sue you if you're wrong? Obviously, he's not confident enough in his abilities to have his words recorded. Hmmmmmmm, but we should let him deal with a life-threatening disease? I don't think so! We found a new doctor shortly thereafter.

I wouldn't say plotting, but there is ample evidence to illustrate that in a rush things can get handled poorly. Are you old enough to remember the swine flu vaccinations in the mid '70's that killed a lot of seniors?

Then there is my last experience withthe medical system. After botching the first surgery at 5:30 PM, I get rushed into surgery at 2:00AM and am brought to by an old nurse wacking me upside the head yelling "BREATH STEVE!". I can remember coming out of the anesthetic thinking, "damn, I'm really not breathing". The hospitals chief-of-staff apologized to me, I thought that was extradinary.

Then they start to feed me real solid food 24 hours after those two surgeries. I ended up barfing all night long with a 13" incesion in my belly. I was really unhappy when they stuck that tube up my nose and down my throat.

And I'm not even mentioning the "in-room-while-I'm-wide-awake cystoscopy that failed. I ended up laying in a puddle of my own blood after the urologist failed to clear the blockage by jabbing wires down there. Then there was the two hemeroids they took out with NO ANESTHETIC! OUCH! That resident suregeons name was Dr. Payne, no joke. I did discover though that there was pain even worse than that when they went to remove those bandages from the hemeroid surgery. At that point, after having been abused that badly over 8 days I just laughed like a lunatic, my DW had to leave the room in tears because she just couldn't stand to see me hurt anymore.

True story.

Me distrust the medical community? YES!
