My opinion (and you get what you pay for here) is that the H1N1 scare is blown out of proportion. Sadly people are dying. But people die from the seasonal flu too, and I've yet to see any real data showing that H1N1 deaths are greater than seasonal flu deaths. A good chunk of the kids in my school (approx 20%) have been out with it and at least three of the teachers that I work with on a daily basis have had it. In fact, I'm feeling a bit cruddy tonight and hope I don't wake up oinking tomorrow.
It is a flu that has spread rapidly through our school. It wasn't long ago at all that we got the first letter about ONE child who may have it (he did - and he was in one of my classes). Now it's more common. But, these kids are coming back to school a week later just fine. The teachers are coming back even sooner. I asked my friend who is a paramedic if they've seen any unusually bad problems from H1N1 - anything worse than the seasonal flu. He said no.
That being said, since neither my son nor I have ever had a bad reaction to a flu shot, we will be getting the H1N1 vaccine when it is available.

Just considering the death rate of H1N1 overlooks a significant part of the issue. Certainly health officials are concerned about deaths. But I think they are just as concerned about the infection rate. Whenever this thing approaches its peak, it's conceivable that there could be very large numbers of people out of work at a time, and that could go on for weeks. This is particularly worrisome when you think about first responders such as police, fire, paramedics/EMTs and, of course, doctors and nurses. Even just dropping in to WalMart or the neighborhood convenience store to pick up a gallon of milk and some bread could become a significantly more difficult task if the person who delivers them, the person who stocks them and a few cashiers are all out sick at the same time.
DH's company is so concerned about the spread of H1N1 affecting large numbers of employees that they've instituted a very strict sick policy that's in effect until spring.

Pawz4me...you make some good points and as I mentioned, H1N1 does seem to be spreading rapidly through our school.
I certainly think precautions are a good idea...that is why my son and I will be getting the vaccine when it's available. But, I'm not of the opinion that the sky is falling.

Veronica, I thought your post was terrific. Anyone around children should certainly be reconsidering thoughts of skipping either vaccine, IMHO.
I'll choose not to rely on the herd immunity--counting on everyone else getting the shot to protect me.

I didn't see anyone post anything like that.

You're right Chris. I hope it stays informative and doesn't end up getting locked because of it.

The AP reported yesterday that 11 more otherwise healthy kids died from H1N1 last week, that deaths of healthy children have already topped the average number of deaths in an average flu season.

Not in this family.
The news media as usual scares everyone with the story, spreading false rumors etc. and the drug companies eat it up knowing everyone will run and get their shot.
Why would I take a shot that had been researched and developed and distributed as fast as possible? The FDA can't even regulate drugs well enough to avoid adverse reactions to almost all drugs that are introduced, and that is after years of trials and research.
You want me to get a shot that was slammed into production within less than a year? I don't think so.

Since my pregnant dd has decided not to take the shot, I am very concerned for the new baby. I asked that she talk with the pediatrician before making the final decision.

Julie,
I haven't read this whole thread, so you may have made up your mind already, but I would have kids of mine get the vaccine. I will get it if I'm kind of eligible for it as will my husband. I know five of our grandchildren are getting it - not sure about the other five.
