We are currently in Moab, and would like to explore both Canyon De Chelly and Monument Valley en route to the Grand Canyon. Does it make sense to go straight from Moab to Canyon de Chelly (191 S) and then cut across to Kayenta and head North? Does it make sense to do Monument Valley first? Any roads to avoid with a big rig in this area? Would appreciate route suggestions... Thanks!
Have done it both ways - so just depends on how much you like to drive.
Best trip was to Mexican Hat then to Monument Valley over to Page then North Rim and Antelope Canyon, then down to Canyon de Chelly and back up and across GCNP.
WHile you are out there don't miss Flagstaff and Sedona -- the Red Rocks just keep getting better.
BOL,
A couple of Pic's from an old post;

These were taken in November and the great thing, along with the weather is the lack of Crowds.
Enjoy the trip,
