Is there a program you can buy or download so that you can use your computer as a GPS system? I thought I saw that you can even put something to display on your TV. Any help would be appreciated.

Here is our most recent thread about two such programs.

MS Streets & Trips or Delorme Street Atlas

To the computer as a GPS, the answer is yes. We use Delorme's Street Atlas as was suggested by the other posters.

To using the TV screen to display it, the answer is: unlikely. First, most TVs in range of the driver's seat have an interlock to keep it from coming on while you are driving. Second, unless it is a very recent TV and you use a special wire to hook it up to the computer, it won't work. Most TVs in RVs (except for the last couple of years) aren't capable. I'd guess your '04 is one that isn't, at least from the factory.

Those who use laptops either put the on the dash as we do or build a stand for them. Our newest laptop has a 17" screen and it works fine running Street Atlas on 2/3 of the area and VMSpc, an engine monitor, on the other 1/3.

You can buy a GPS receiver and attach it to your computer; most today are USB, older models and professional grade GPS systems may use other hardware standards.

You can get all kinds of free software to interact with your GPS receiver, including mapping programs.

If what you want is an automotive mapping package that uses a GPS, your options include Streets & Trips, DeLorme Street Atlas, CoPilot, and a half dozen others not aimed toward the consumer market. Streets & Trips and Street Atlas can be bought with a USB GPS receiver in the package.

There is no software that will turn your computer into a GPS receiver, unless it came with a GPS receiver built in. There are hand-held computers with built in receivers; many are sold today as telephones.
