Just yesterday, Verizon announced a new Android-based (Google's operating system for cell phones) phone which should be available at the end of October. From those who have seen it (not that we haven't heard this before), but it is truly reputed to a serious challenger to the iPhone. The Washington Post called it "real deal". Check out the cute promo at www.droiddoes.com. Then, just Google it and read a few of the ads.
If it holds true to the expectations, I'll be first in line. I've wante an iPhone for a long time, but I will NOT go to ATT. But if I can get the features of the iPhone, on Verizon's superior network I'm there! Anybody else?
yeah, i'm very anxious to give this device a try, and with open source Android OS, any developer/programmer who wants too, can write apps and make them available on the net, the Android OS app market could explode with if the right device comes along.
the main reason there are so many apps for the iPhone is because apple developers were already 'out there' about 25yrs since the apple-II, doing Mac programs for many years, it was an easy switch for them to start doing iphone apps
the android developers are staring from a zero point but gathering members & momentum
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother ....

According to one article, the Android OS already has 10,000 apps written for it. Still far short of the 80,000 or so the the iPhone, but it ain't shabby for a new OS!
According to published reports, Android will surpass the iPhone for subscribers by 2012. You can bet that developers are going to where the market will be.
IMHO, the iPhone moved the handset business forward, but Apple will soon regret staying with their exclusive arrangement on the ATT network. Millions of users on the Verizon network will go with Android before they even get a crack at that subscriber base.
i'm not an apple fan.. however i got an iphone 3g a week or two ago and i am extremley happy with it.
really the only lacking feature i find (mines jail broken) is the fact that there is no flash player.
i do not have experiance with andriod have heard of it and i'm sure in a couple years its going to be as good or better than the locked down iphone OS.
i'll caption my comment by saying i live in a 3g coverage area which AT&T is lacking in nationwide... 3g kills the battery so i leave it off and use my wifi.. i'm pretty much at home all the time any ways.

The processor on the current Android phones don't have the capabilities of the iPhone's processor; thus, 3D games don't stack up. The new Droid is said to use the same processor as the iPhone. Which one will developers support?

Actually not correct. While some of the developers are Mac developers, many of them are windows developers and new developers who were just following the money trail..
umm, apple app store is open source. Anyone can write for it...
The reviews are mainly all the same, android is nice, but it's no iphone..

That's not what Open Source is all about
The Apple App store requires a developer to sign an agreement to behave exactly as Apple wants and to only develop what Apple (and ATT) want to allow. There have been many apps that were never approved because Apple or ATT decided that they didn't like them.
Hence the reason that many iPhones were 'jail broken' and an independent app store has arisen.
It remains to be seen whether the Droid App store will be controlled or truly open.
if the DROID & Android are truly open like windows, then NO app store is needed, write your own app, or pick one off the net and install it.
there is NO vzw or ATT app store for windows and both carriers have windows smart devices PPC's on their systems, there is NO reason for DROID & Android2 OS to NOT be open, to try and lock this would be against Googles stated objective and would backfire on Verizon.
verizon has been a closed pipe with brew2 controlling content availability ( which is the biggest gripe users have ), ATT did the same thing with iPhone and their app store. but jail breaking messes with that 'reality'.
Windows has been the primary open smart OS available, Android2 presents new opportunities to smart phone users
