i call the credit card company and change our billing address to our lot in Arizona. That gives me the zip code. No mail is sent, cause everything is seen online and paid auto debit. It has worked well for the last 3 years. Don't forget to call your credit card company and let them know you will be travelling from xxdate-to xx date. It stops lots of hassel making purchases. We are stationary for 5 months, and they have a phone number to reach us.
Don't forget to change your billing address when you get back home..
Dona heading to AZ this weekend.

Try calling CIBC Visa customer service at 1-800-465-4653 and use the automated system to talk to a human voice!

I read a magazine article that indicated that if you use the numbers from your Canadian Postal code then add two zeros then your card will work in the readers in the gas pumps. For example the postal code M1P3S5 would be entered as 13500.

I haven't tested this extensively but in two or three gas pumps that required a zip code in Alaska it worked this past summer. I'm going to try in the US this winter.

I have tried using just any zip code-it does not work. Changing the billing address works(not the mailing addr of the statements). We get no statements in mail, so no problem. This way, all our fuel is charged and I don't have to keep all the paper receipts, its all on my statement and I print it out each month. Easy to calculate to see just how much diesel we bought over the winter. Dona

I always pay for my gas with my Visa and haven't run into this problem. I've only done so in the North East so perhaps we will have problems as we move south. I certainly hope not.

We have occasionally run into this. When it happens, I go inside with our Visa card and wait with it while DH fills the tank. Sometimes we have been required to put through a certain amount and then the clerk will re-adjust the charge.

Yes, your Visa will work inside but what we want is a way to pay at the pump when a Zip code is requested (I hate standing in the "slurpee" line). A couple of workable suggestions have been presented here (change the card billing address to a US address, use a Canadian debit card issued by a Canadian bank that is member of the NYCE at a US gas station chain that is also a member, use a check/debit card issued by an US bank). The following link suggests why some of the at-pump numerical "work-arounds" seem to work sometimes.

Work Arounds

This site keeps a comprehensive list of stations that do and do not accept Canadian credit cards at the pump along the I75 corridor (Gas Stations). We've found that the incidence of requiring the zip code at the pump has increased significantly over the last few years. We've encountered it a lot from California to Florida and points in between. In central and south Florida the practice is so prevalent that we've given up looking for stations that don't require the Zip code, although there must be a few left there. Used to be we would just move on to the next station but even the Wal-Mart in Homestead wants the Zip now. On the other hand, a station we often use in northern New York just across the border does not. That may simply be due to the number of Canadian customers they get.
