To get the water left in the lines after pumping in the pink stuff between the bypass valves and the water heater should I crack the upper and lower bypass valves and let a small amount of pink stuff go into the water heater?

Yes, but just a little. Antifreeze is not needed in the WH as long as it has been drained. I always put the drain plug back in to keep the critters out.

We've never bothered and haven't had a problem. It MAY depend on just how your bypass system is designed. Ours has only an inch or two of lines beyond the valve until it reaches the tank but some have the valve located some distance from the tank.

It really depends on your bypass design. Mine is a 1 valve so no need in my case. I just drain it, bypass it, then pop the anode back in place. For a 2 or three valve you might indeed have some water in the lines. I would do as you suggest, a little pink in the WH will do no damage.

Hammerdown, the way I understand it is the drain in the water heater is the absolutely low point drain of the water heater & its system. By that just like the low point drain of your trailer, it/they are designed to be the lowest point thus allowing by gravity to drain water completely. The inlet and outlet of the water in the heater is higher in the tanks design, thus when the by pass valve is opened and the supply & outlet is closed any water remaining, line or tank would drain by pulling that plug located at the very bottom of that tank. As far with the rest of the trailer system, the low point may not be the low point of the trailers water lines. There could be a sagging line some where, and most likely is. Capturing some water, thus the use of a pump to pump anti-freeze threw out the whole system occupying all of the lines space.Including by the way the pump itself, with the pink stuff. Remember to be sure to open/pump ALL WATER LINES in your model. Water intake (before pump), outside shower, tub, sink/s, toilet/s, any where there was a hint of water while in use. The p-traps in the sink, and tubs are an example of trapped water, by literally their design. Thus why you have to pour anti- freeze down every drain. Both, or more than two, holding tanks, the manufactures are usually very stringent in their design to have a good drain, in these. Still I pore a small amount of anti--freeze into each of these as a precaution, including that excess that goes threw the p-traps. Even though latter in the showers/sinks come spring, the smell & pink stuff seams to linger for some time

I put the plug back in the heater but only enough to hold it. I don't like mice in my Hot water Heater, I find they can be more of taste problem and smell problem than the pink stuff. They are almost imposable to get out once they there cooked. Bill

Polishnurse, To a lurt my self. How do you surmise the mice got into the heater with that exterior door closed & secured ? I have never, in all my years, though of this, and maybe I should have.

Same way the get into hope chest, dressers and the best one I remember a ketchup bottle half filled with ketchup. They do it when your not looking, they way it's kept a mouse secret. Bill
