I have found a decent tow vehicle that I am interested in. It seems well equipped. It does have 4.10 rear end, which is great for towing but not so good for gas mileage.
If you own one of these (gasoline, not diesel) can you let me know what kind of gas mileage you get WITHOUT towing (with towing too if you want).
The specs of this vehicle is: Silverado 2500HD, 6.0 L, 4.10 Rear end. If there is other information you need to know let me know.
I have a 2006 2500 HD with the 6.0 4x4 and I pull my Montana just fine.
I get 12 to 14 around town without the trailer and 8 to 9 with the trailer. My trailer is around 11,500

Look at it this way, if you want to tow with relative ease, a 4:10 is the way to go. If you want a very SMALL increase in MPG, a 3:78 will give you that. There is no way to get the best of both worlds with one or the other. Lesson #1, RVing is a series of compromises.
Whith the GMC 2500 HD, I get fairly similar milage to sstgermain, maybe a little less not towing. I have the 8.1 L engine, and my trailer is about 7,900.

If, when completion of a design is imminent, field dimensions are finally supplied as they actually are, instead of as they were meant to be, it is always simpler to start over from scratch.
10 to 12 around town. 12 to 14 on the highway going 70 to 75. When I slow to 59 to 60 and set the cruise I have seen 17. This was on flat with a tail wind. I usually tend to drive it like I stole it and my MPG suffers. If I could not have afforded it I would not have bought it.

I did not see what transmission the truck has, but the newer 6sp certainly helps with 4.10 mpg. You can get the towing power and still have decent mileage when not towing.
2005 2500HD, 6.0 4.10's. Consistent 14mpg 50/50 highway/city. That is pretty light on the gas too, slow to take off from stoplights, 60 mph in the slow lane.
Steve what year is it? I have a 2008 with the 6-spd and same gearing with the gas engine. I get about 15MPG no matter how I drive it (it seems). Towing, I get 9MPG, again no matter what speed I drive at.
Very pleased so far as we had no need for the dino-burner and this is my daily driving truck.

I have a 2003 2500HD,6.0,410. I installed a Araid air intake, headers, flow through muffler and computer tuned the motor.I pull a 10000 lbs 5er at 65 or better and get 10 mpg. With load 17 in city.Lots of extra power.
I used to have an 01 2500HD but it had the 8.1 ltr with 4:10 rear end, and allison tranny. I towed a 13k pound 5th wheel with it, and took it through mountains with no problem. I had no problem passing anything on the freeway, except a gas station. I averaged between 6-7 mpg and that started to really pile up on gas bills when I was using the camper. Without the 5ver, I got maybe 9 mpg on the straight-away. It was a very reliable truck and never gave me any problems. The only nagging problem was a faulty fuel sensor which showed that I was on empty at stoplights, and only showed how much gas I had when I was moving. I've heard that was a common problem with these trucks. Although I switched over to a Ford Diesel dually because I just felt the pin weight on my 5ver may have been just a little too much for the 2500hd, and the Ford was the only one with low miles and something that was affordable, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 2500HD to anyone that was interested in buying one as a tow vehicle.
