I just traded a '03 Silverado 1500, 5.3 Z-71 with 3:73 gears for a '09 2500HD, 6.0, 3:73 gears, with the Heavy tow package, basically the exact same truck. The new one has the 6 speed that the dealer said is a lighter Allison. I pull a 27' Wildwood. Just took it on it's maiden voyage this past weekend. All I can say is WOW what a differance. I pulled the Wildwood almost 3,000 miles this summer with the 1500 and was wore out each day. With the new truck pulling the trailer is effortless. That thing is great. The 6 speed makes all the differance in the world, as does the extra weight. My gas mileage on the DIC was 8.7 at approximately 70 mph. My city driving is around 12 right now. Only have 1300 miles on it. Best "mod" I have ever done for my trailer!!

If you own one of these (gasoline, not diesel) can you let me know what kind of gas mileage you get WITHOUT towing (with towing too if you want).
The specs of this vehicle is: Silverado 2500HD, 6.0 L, 4.10 Rear end. If there is other information you need to know let me know.
thanks

Mileage is what it is. The truck you describe may get as little as 10 or less if operated in town. It may be as high as 15 on occasion with that ideal highway drive, and get maybe 8 or 9 pulling a heavy camper, but what matters is how much you're going to be out of pocket with the combined purchase of the vehicle, maintenance and fuel costs. A 2500 6.0 powered truck with a 4 speed transmission is going to burn some fuel, but it makes good power and lasts a long time. It will tow a trailer up to around 8,000 pounds (perhaps more) just fine. The yearly difference in money spent between a 3:73 and a 4:10 won't be very much, 5% perhaps?
I wouldn't put fuel mileage very high on the list if you can get a nice one for a good price. Your total cost to buy and operate it over the next 5 years will be a good bit less than that of a diesel regardless of the MPG numbers.

I get 12 to 14 around town without the trailer and 8 to 9 with the trailer. My trailer is around 11,500

When towing the 5er in the mountains, I get anywhere fron 7.3 to 9 mpg. On the way to the beach, after the roads flattened out, I got up to 9.5 mpg.
I can't complain about the vehicles ability to pull my camper. Camper and truck scaled on last trip at 15,800 lbs. That is only 400 under the CGVWR but it pulled great.
That's about what I got from the 5sp truck we had. Was as good at 70 in 5th as 55 in 4th. Empty highway 16-17.5 about 13 in town. You dont really gain any milesge with the 3:73 gears, the motor needs RPM's.
Get 11'ish with the Duramax, and I miss the stick.
