Just got back from dinner and the retired couple in the 5th next to me were cleaning the gravel and the grass all around their 5th with a power washer.
Apparantly their black tank had ruptured. I'm not talking leak or drip. I'm talking about a vurtual explosion.
What a mess! They can't stay in it tonight, and I'm not sure that they will be able to for a while.
Has anybody ever heard of anything like this?

Possibly they were backflushing the tank to rinse it. If you overfill the tank with a flusher it is possible to burst the tank. These large flat tanks will not withstand any pressure. The tank often bursts before the water rises to the top of the vent. There is at least one or two posts of that happening every year. Sometimes it even bulges and ruins the floor above the tank.

Someone should be spreading lime all over the spill. Helps kill the odor and bacteria. If I were you, I wouldn't get close to this mess.

Plastic tanks (the kind used in the RVs) are basically good for about 3 psi of pressure......and if their vent was plugged, they would be pressurizing it, if they were trying to clean it! And water pressure from the garden hose would be in the neighborhood of about 50-60 psi....so it's no wonder it went "Boom"!
I agree, add lime to the area. A pressure washer is just spreading feces and such around.....and into the air too!
You might want to ask about another site for the night....especially if you are leaving windows open!!

In 2002-03 a tank manufacturer (not sure of the name) had defective fitting welds to their tanks. Had a friend of mine have his tank blow at this connection. He had it rewelded twice and each time it cracked again. He ended up removing the whole tank, involving cutting some framework underneath, and installing all new tanks. What a mess! He did find when he removed the underbelly, that the insulation which he had to replace anyway, was all bunched up, and not insulating much of anything. This was in an 02 Montana. Not sure of the model.
Makes you wonder just what is lurking as problems in the places we can't see in our RV's.

Reference this question: If you have a back-flush fitting for a hose (for cleaning out the tank), is their a possibility of tank rupture. My Dealer told me to never use this flushing system unless the big pipe caps are off or big problems will occur. My other RV's didn't have that feature and I haven't used this one yet. Just trying to learn all the new things. Thanks

I'm curious also. I use the flusher the end of each season with the valve closed. I have not had a explosion. Guess I'll be leaving the valve open after reading this.
