Not sure how long you are planning on driving in one day, but sounds like about 8 hours per day. We are about 8 hours south of you, close to Emporia, KS and it takes us 16 to 17 hours to get to RGV. Ditto what they say about I435 around KC. There are a couple of ways to make the jump from I35 to I435 so look at your map and take your pick. Avoid driving I35 through downtown KC because it is a nightmare. If you driving about 8 hours, there is an RV park in Emporia, just off I35 that is easy on, easy off. Not sure of rates, but reasonable. There is also Wally World and Flying J if that is your preference. From Emporia it is about 8 hours to Ft. Worth area or a little further along. There are several parks in that area that are right close to the interstate, again easy off, easy on. Agree to I35W through Ft. Worth, shorter and less traffic. We have always gone through Austin but have always timed it so we went through on a weekend. Even then traffic is heavy but at least doesn't come to a screeching halt like during the week. KS weather that time of year may or may not be cold. Have seen it both ways. Your second night in TX should be cool but past all danger of freezing. Have a safe trip.
We have traveled to and from Northern Iowa. Take I-35 down to DeMoines, Take I-80 over to York Nebraska(nice RV Park There)go south on 81, turns into 135 at Salina Kansas. Continue on you will Pick up I-35 south of Wichita Kansas. Then do as others have posted with I35 south. Take I-35W through Ft Worth. Have a safe trip
The RV park in Emporia, Kansas, is Emporia RV Park and Campground. We stayed there in mid-August, full hookup cost with Good Sam discount was $27.
I've been the route suggest by Rug - I-80 west to York, then south on US-81. Good road, four-lane, IIRC, from York to Salina, Kansas, where you pick up I-135 to Wichita, then I-35 and the turnpike. When we go to Omaha, return via US-73/75 to Topeka, then pick up I-35 and the turnpike there. Good road, some two-lane, but cuts about 50 miles off the trip.
If you decide to take I-44, then US-281, you could stop off in my hometown, Anadarko, Oklahoma (18 miles off I-44, then US-62 back to I-44) and stay in our city park. 30/50 amp hookups, water at selected sites, dump nearby, cost $8.00, or $5.00 for senior citizens.

Just got to Mission coming down US81 from York, NE all pretty good road, some construction, but where will you travel 1200 -1500 miles and not have some construction. Worst place was Fort Worth on Saturday, there was a Blue Angles display at the airport and folks were backed up on I35W forever. Not usually this bad. We have come down and gone back up this road for 3 winters/springs now. Think it is the best.
If you come down I-35 out of OK, then as others stated, I-35W at Denton, TX thru Ft Worth merging back into I-35 at Hillsboro. I35E comes right thru the big middle of downtown Dallas and it doesn't take much of a fender bender to cause miles and miles of six lane parking lot for about 30 miles.
I would strongly suggest that you exit I-35 at Waco, Tx and get on US77 south to Victoria, take the west side loop around Victoria and stay on US77 to Robstown. This is an excellent road with lots of roadside picnic areas in addition to numerous RV campgrounds that are open year round.
This routing keeps you clear of the Austin/Roundrock/Georgetown area, in addition to any traffic in the San Antonio area. Just be aware that I-35 from Laredo, north to North Texas is loaded with trucks, trucks and more trucks.
At Robstown you need to know which side of the RGV you're headed to.
If staying on the So Padre Is. side, stay on US77. If not, cut across to Alice on TX 44, then south on US281. The winter snow birds increase the population in the RGV to a million more plus. US83 that traverses the RGV from east to west can be trying at times.
The US281 suggestion is a darn good route from Wichita Falls, only draw back is that it takes you some 125 to 175 miles out of the way.
For those going to Laredo or Del Rio, the difference is nil. RGV is due south of the DFW area and SAT is southwest by some distance.

Now enjoying mother earth at ground level and one mile per minute.
Good luck Randy. Sounds like something my parents should do too. Maybe you could talk them into going as well.
