Actually, what you need is a good, strong, radioactive isotope in a lead box, with a shutter that can be opened to direct the radiation in a specific direction. Just play the beam over, around, and up inside the faucet, and the radiation will quite effectively sterilize everything it hits. There will be no residual radioactivity.
Since many of these isotopes have a half life of many hundreds (or thousands) of years, there will never be a need to "recharge" the Bug-Beamer.
You could build a similar sterilizer using the magnetron out of a micro-wave oven, but it would require electricity, and be heavy and awkward.
Or, you could just use bottled water for everything, and never use the onboard system at all.
Whatever gives you the warm fuzzies...

That's why they recommend bleach be diluted when used to sanitize water systems.
And then thrown away after 24 hours or less according to those that clean kitchens as per Health Department rules.

Proceeded to dump his black, then grey, unhook, shake it down, then walk over to the water spigot, shove the sewer hose on to the spigot & turn the water on! He proceeded to rinse it out straight to the water spigot.

Saw the same thing happen on return trip this weekend... dirty sewer hose right over the potable water spigot. Gross.

Those of you that say this is a non-issue or much ado about nothing, I enourage you to hook up your fresh water hose after somebody described above has just finished rinsing his black water hose, while the spigot is still wet.

I don't think it's a matter of your hose getting contaminated as much as your hands. How many people use gloves to protect themselves when hooking up to fresh water? If you do, then you're right, this is a non-issue.

I use the fresh water spigot to back flush my black water tank (with a separate garden hose of course) when leaving my campsite. I figure it's my part of being a considerate camper. When I'm done I use that same hose dedicated for rinsing only, to rinse out my sewer hose. I then spray the spigot with a 50% mixture of bleach & water. I also mist down the sewer hose compartment to cut down on the odors.

Just my two cents...
