DH and I are planning a 5 day trip to Asheville area in mid December. How concerned should we be about the possibility/probability of snow or icy road conditions? Our TT is insulated, but the underside (where the pipes are) is not. Is it too cold to use our RV in the area in December???
Has anyone camped in this area at this time of year? If so, any suggestions on where to camp?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi! That should be a great trip in December. We went this spring and stayed at Campfire Lodgings and it was beautiful. It is on top of a mountain with a great view from your trailer. It is up a steep mountain, but they are open in the winter unless the snow is too bad to get up the mountain. Biltmore would be great in December.

The weather in Asheville in Dec. is very unpredictable. Could be 60's in the day and 40 degrees at night, or can be 30's in the day and teens at night. Or, more likely, could be both in the same week. If you don't like the weather in the mountains, just stick around. It will change. The only way to really plan is to look at the weather forcast just before your trip. Hope you have a great time.
It is rare to get snow in December, in Asheville, but this year has been wet and if it continues, snow is possible. Nice thing is that is normally warms up within a day or two and the snow is gone. Freezing pipes could happen, but keeping some water barely running will help keep the exposed pipes from freezing. Also, a light bulb puts out just enough heat to keep water from freezing in many cases. My parents have an unheated bathroom at their business, and a light bulb is all that keeps the pipes from freezing.
I've driven this route many times in my life since 1978 in all seasons. Never had a problem, even with snow on the roads and towing the trailer. Just slow down.
Bigger problem right now on I-40 than impending snow is the rock slide! They say it may take quite a while to get it cleared up.
From AOL News:
RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 25) — A rockslide in western North Carolina near the Tennessee state line has closed Interstate 40, and officials say it could take several months to clear the debris. The state Department of Transportation on Sunday issued an emergency declaration. Initial estimates from engineers are that it could take several months to clean up the entire slide and restore traffic.
DOT said a contractor is en route to begin clean up.

A rockslide has been blocking Interstate 40 in both directions in Haywood County, N.C., since early Sunday. The site is three miles from the Tennessee border.
The rockslide occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near mile marker 3 in Haywood County. The debris pile is 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, reported WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tenn.
A detour has been set up. Motorists traveling west to Tennessee should take I-40 West to I-240 West in Asheville to I-26 West. Follow I-26 West from Asheville to I-81 South in Tennessee, back to I-40. Eastbound motorists will follow the reverse directions.

You should be fine, we were up that way last year for a week after Christmas in Waynesville. The weather was great. Light Jacket was all that was needed. Make sure you go to the Biltmore House the Christmas decorations are outstanding. Call now and get reservations for the evening tour. It is breathtaking!!!
Now the Rock Slide latest is 3 months before it is all cleaned up. The said there are bolders the size of mobile homes that they have to deal with.

Thanks for the info. The rockslide won't effect our visit - we're coming from Myrlte Beach, SC and don't have to go that far on I 40. Sounds like we have little to worry about!
I would not worry too much. Yes, the weather folks are calling for a wetter than normal winter this year but what form of wet is going to have a lot to do with the artic air. I would make my plans. I think you could probably wait until the week before you come up before making reservations for that time of year. I would make sure the place you want to stay is open year round though. The weather in this area can be "quare"; as they say,in the winter.

Rock slide will not bother folks in NC /SC going to Asheville. It is at MM3 in NC. From Tenn area you just go I-81 to I-26 and come south to Asheville..Any snow in December in Asheville is usually a quick fall/melt event.
