I'm still ticked off about my cable company making me use a little black box to decode their digital signal. I use my TV remote to turn on or off, then their crappy little remote for all else. I lose PIP, plus have to juggle 2 remotes.
I know buying a digital TV (mine is old) won't change the problem. Would going to satellite allow you to use the features of your TV? Or is it the same ---- have to use their box?
Seems to me like the TV manufacturers and the cable/satellite industry aren't talking to each other.

On the sat you will need a box for each TV. I do use sat when because I travel and can take the dish with me. But with a Sat. you will need a box, the remote I think can be programmed to work the tv. I have not, but think it is possible.

IF you use satellite TV you will need a RECEIVER but it doesn't need any kind of decoder at all. You will use the remote they provide but it's a very good remote. You can ALSO program many TV remotes to operate the satellite box and THAT method should allow you to continue to use all of the features of your TV. The REALLY BIG difference is that you won't need those MILES and MILES of cable trailing out the back of the RV when you travel and you can still get all the channels you get at home.

Yes, you must use the satellite service's box, since it's the receiver for the satellite signals.
I have a single remote that controls my TV, cable box, DVD, and VCR. It came with my cable box.

For the PIP you will need a dual tuner satellite box. A little more money but worth it.

You can get TVs with "cable cards" installed in them that allow you to bypass the Cable company's set top box. I don't know how widely available they are and you should check with your cable company first to determine if they support them. - Dave

An advantage of satellite TV is that they also offer music audio. We are soon going to move from Direct to Dish to get a better selection of music.

If you are on an RV forum (Duhhh), Satellite wins hands down. Cable does't work very well in an RV becasue you need a really long wire to make it work when you travel. I've been with DirecTV for 14 years and have always been thrilled with it.

But satellite does not win "hands down," when the thread is about a "stick-house" installation.
Is a question about a stick-house installation acceptable on a RV forum? Yes - the forum is for RVers, not for RVs.

You might want to check if the remote provided by the cable company can be programmed to turn on/off your TV and other devices. I have been able to program my cable box remote to turn the TV, DVD player, and surround sound receiver on/off in addition to the cable box. Call your cable provider and ask. Good luck.
