I cant see Verizon doing the iphone soon not with the Droid adds being so anti iphone and Steve jobs is not a person to cotton to that! plus it would be a usa only one off cdma phone with no international ability unless they fit two radios in it. Most bets I've seen are 2012 when Verizon moves to LTE fully( they start next year) same as ATT will do ( a little behind).
The story I've heard lately is Verizon was spreading the rumor to keep customers from switching to ATT Knowing they had little chance of getting it and until they could move to the Droid as their answer.
Nobody trashes the iphone in a ad one day then says gee look we have it come to us! Just aint happening

that rumor has been floating around since the iPhone hit the market 2 yrs ago.
and thats all it is RUMOR
From those well-known rumor-mongers at Computerworld Magazine (yesterday):
Apple to ink Verizon-iPhone deal next year, analyst says
As I indicated before, I really don't see an upside for Verizon in a deal like this.
Dave
There is a huge upside for Verizon. Those millions of subscribers who jumped ship to get the iPhone would probably return to Verizon. Those of us who have the last iPhone killer(LG Dare), but didn't get internet service, because the phone just didn't measure up would get the internet service and pay more a month. If Verizon gets the iPhone I will pony up $30 a month for it.
The reviews for the Droid phone so far are good, but many of them are stating it's on iPhone killer.
The CEO of Verizon had publicly stated they want the iPhone and its up to Apple.

AT&T's 3G map has way more coverage than they are depicting in the ad. Verizon still has better coverage in some areas, but they are not showing actual coverage.
You mean the same way that AT&T's own 3G map states that it does not depict actual coverage?
I was away for the weekend recently on a retreat and all the AT&T folks had to use my phone for just normal phone calls (not 3G data which is even worse) and they were all complaining about the terrible coverage they have all the time. Dead spots even in the cities and main freeway corridors.

Good Point! We can bash ATT vs. Verizon all day, just as the folks who go head to head about diesel vs. gas, Class A, vs. Class C, ect.
IMO, if you are saying that the AT&T network isn't as bad as Verizon makes it out to be, you are admitting that Verizon is much better, just not as much as they claim in their advertising.
I don't think that anyone wants to make the claim that AT&T has a network of comparable quality and reach to Verizon Wireless--there is too much independent evidence to the contrary.

I have both a Verizon phone and an iPhone on AT&T. Verizon coverage wins hands down here in the west. My biggest complaint with AT&T is that the signal can't penetrate buildings. I can be in front of a store in the parking lot and have 4 bars. Go inside the store and I totally loose converage. I don't know if that's an AT&T thing or a GSM thing but it sucks.

The High frequency ATT is using doesn't penetrate walls as well .. In many areas they are switching to their lower band to improve signal penetration/distance (Like Sf and NY )

uncle charlie switched from AT&T to verizon because of AT&Ts poor coverage in this area, my phone worked in his condo on riverside drive where Burbank meets glendale and his ATT phones did not.
my friends Bill & Rose have to stand in front of their apt patio door to use their Tmo phones.
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

We are one of those company's that switched from Verizon for ONLY one reason, the IPHONE. We switched about 12 phones. AT&T has decent coverage in most of our service areas, but it's not as good as Verizon's by any means. Some whole cities around us have no AT&T coverage. Previous Verizon service was quite good in the same areas. I'm no a fan of AT&T's service. 3G service is frequently not available either. But, I don't want to give up our IPHONE's either.

Verizon's 3G coverage ad is all hype.
I'm sure that Verizon showed their 3G coverage from both their towers AND the towers they have sharing agreements with, while the AT&T coverage just shows AT&T owned towers.
3G is by no means required for use of a smart phone with it's tiny screen, even for watching most videos. NJ has complete AT&T 3G in the state, yet I set my phone to the slower EDGE network to save battery life. I rarely notice a difference in performance.
The only time 3G is "more" important is when you are using an aircard with a laptop. Even so, 2G still performs okay for most web surfing.
Would I "jump ship" if Verizon get the iPhone? Probably not. I've never had an issue with Cingular/AT&T over the years. In fact, I've found the sound quality when talking to Verizon users to be far inferior (kind of bubbly and underwater sounding) than that of when I'm talking to another AT&T user (GSM).
AT&T uses the international GSM technology. Verizon use proprietary CDMA technology used only by Verizon and only in the US.

Do you have a source for that? It is hard to get an AT&T 3G coverage map for the entire US. Here is the best I can do from their site. The 3G areas are in blue.

Here is the Verizon coverage map. Again, the 3G areas are in blue.

We travel a lot and have found the Verizon map to be very accurate.

I guess CDMA is proprietary, since it is not open source. But it was Qualcomm, not Verizon, who developed it. Sprint also uses this technology. In Canada - Bell Mobility. In Mexico - Iusacell. China - China Telecom. And so forth. My point here is not to argue which is a better technology, GSM or CDMA, only to correct the above.
