You may also see brown paper bags hanging in an open window or door that have been puffed up to hold their shape. Theory is that it discourages wasps and hornets from entering the building and setting up shop. They see the bag and figure someone has beat them to it.
There is a small hand painted wood sign pointing to The Bus on the main drag. The trip up to Salmon Glacier is definitely worth it; I have been to all seven continents and the best view of a glacier that you can drive to anywhere is up top that road. You can go further back and see another glacier up close and abandoned mines and mills. Before they blocked the dirt road several miles up above the glacier you could slip your Jeep into serious four wheel drive mode and go as far as your courage would take you.
I don't go to The Bus anymore - ever since the proprietor's husband bragged about killing a wolf up by the bear observatory a few years back.
The halibut and chips at the King Eddy Hotel in Stewert is excellent! SO is the chocolate fudge at that little shop on the left just as you enter center city Hyder.

Well, Joe, folklore in the Yukon while I was growing up was that those who drank copious amounts of alcohol attracted more bugs. Therefore, going dry will solve the problem. I think that is the real reason many northern communites have gone "dry" ... to reduce the bug problem.
Hey sue, but notice I was close to one of the protective plastic bags of water so I was safe. Had an old guy down on the Yukon tell me one time, just the opposite. He said if a person drank enough hooch (kickapoo joy juice)it would protect him. The bugs got the hooch into their systems after a bite, that when they got close to a camp fire they would explode. This is the real story of the origin of lightning bugs IMHO.
