I would like to know what the actual combined GVW of my MH and toad is. Am considering pulling in to a weigh station on the interstate and would like to know how they tell you your weight. Anyone tried this before?

those weigh stations are usuallt for big trucks. they only tell you your weight if your overweight, while at the same time writing you a ticket. they are for dot use. go to a truck stop and look for a certified scale. youll get your numbers there and wont have to deal with state police.good luck.

if you look out in front of your vehicle say about 10 to 15 yards, there will be a digital read out of your weight as you roll across the scales.

Most states will just run you out again. why not stop at a CAT scale and just PAY the $8.00 to get your weights.

RV's do not have weight limits by any statute. Only commercial vehicles have an enforceable weight limit. So........there will be no ticket. You won't make the officers happy though since the weigh stations are only for commercial vehicles.....and I'd guess the truckers may frown a bit also..

Your local landfill or gravel pit may let you run through at no charge. I've run through the highway scales, but only when they're closed and no one is around. There is usually a digital readout. I've also used the cat scales and find them to be the easiest and no hassle from anyone. This way you get a print out with your weights.

In Washington state when the truck scales are closed the scales still operate. That may be the case in your state. I would not enter if they were open.

Motorhomes can be overweight and illegal for two reasons.

ONE: over their GAWR - This is illegal and subject to fines and even removal of licence. A government scale could issue a fine.
TWO: over DOT permissible axle weights. 20,000 lbs for any single in almost all states. A few have a grandfather clause that allows up to 22,000lbs. 34,000 lbs for a tandem axle. This is also illegal but enforcement is weak so far. Ohio turnpike and parts of the PA turnpike will disallow overweight motorhomes.
Many states and provinces will allow motorhomes to be weighed . They will wave you on or do your weight. no problem and No charge. some are left "on" at night and after hours and can be used

Is there a local feed store? The ones around here only charge about five bucks, a lot cheaper that CAT scales. Gary

Many Flying Js have scales also. I weighed my Class A at one of two nearby stations. It was either $7 or $8.
