Standard operating procedure for me.
This is never a bad idea going new places or to remote places especially with the oem chevy/gmc smallish tank. I have one of these trucks too. A bigger tank is on the mods list!

skipnchar wrote: Never planned a fuel stop in my life. When I NEED fuel I stop and buy it. If one station has fuel for two cents per gallon cheaper than another, GUESS which one I use When prices are the SAME I've avoid truck stops MOST of the time since they're just WAY to busy. With only a 58 foot rig there are few fuel stations that I can't use easily. When I've using the F-150 to tow, it has a 35 gallon tank and the diesel has 38 so fuel stops aren't all that frequent.
With a two cents a gallon difference, meaning 78 cents per tank, I am GUESSING you use the one that has the easiest access, if not go see a psychiatrist.

Have Flying J & Pilot truck stops programmed into my GPS.
Overhead is 'fairly' accurite on the Distance to Empty (34 gal tank)
When I get around 1/2 tank, I start to compare the DTE to the GPS and make planned stop to combine walking dog, fuel, potty break etc
Also have 5 gals of diesel in bed, just in case

My buddys 08 Duramax is only getting 12mpg empty and a 26gal tank is just insane. He just ordered I think a 45gal tank that replaces the stock tank. That would be a great upgrade to your truck.

My fuel planning depends on our destination. Whenever we go to Charlotte, we plan to fuel up in Wytheville, Virginia along I-77. Diesel is generally 25 cents or more cheaper than Ohio at any truck stop there. Truck holds 160 gallons so it's a nice savings. Roughly 111 gallons going south and again coming north - almost $60 saved. When we had our F350s (7.3 & 6.0 w/4.11 rear towing 15k), couldn't make it on 38 gallons (360 miles).

I had a 60 gal aux tank in the Silverado, I would stop for fuel twice on the way to Michigan from San Antonio, TX. The combo gave me a 750 mile range when towing. I installed the tank in my new Ford, and now have a 900 mile range. I should only have to stop once for fuel on the next trip to Michigan. It sure is nice to not worry if the rig is going to fit at the next filling station. An aux tank is money well spent.

I planned a fuel stop on my first trip, knowing that we would be traveling in remote places that parallel Route 66. Was fighting a headwind but made the fuel stop with little to spare. One gas station on either side of the freeway. Oh crap! Neither station carried diesel! Too far to turn back, too far to go farther forward. Fortunately I have a very outgoing (and beautiful) wife, and there was a big rig parked nearby on a break. She asked for some fuel, they said "sure thing", then I walked up. The look on their face changed a little and they suggested the mini mart for a siphon hose. They gave us as much as we wanted and saved the day. Now I plan my stops to a range of 150-200 miles instead of 250.

I have 2ea 5 gal fuel cans in the bed, figure an extra 50 miles while towing. I have a looong bed with the 35 gal tank, so I am good for about 300-350 miles towing. I look for fuel around 1/3 of a tank.
A good friend was returning from an outing thinking he could get fuel at several places in a nearby town, well a storm knocked out power and no fuel was available, drove as far as he could and then sent another friend ahead to get some fuel for him. He now carries a spare can of fuel in the rig.

Good advice and what I did until I got extra tank in bed.

Is there a way to set up a "Garmin" GPS to only display fuel stations with diesel ??
During a recent trip alot of time was wasted driving around town looking for fuel, NOT worried because I had at least 1/4 tank + 2 fuel cans, but I would rather be cruising down the freeway.
