I read in my book that came with my CharBroil commercial grill with cast iron grates that one should never use a brush with brass bristles on cast iron. Stainless steel only. So that is what I use. I is 5 years old and still looks like new. I do wipe down the grill after brushing with crumpled newspaper just to remove some of the "not burned off" grease.

Just today I was cleaning my grill and noticed the brush was "shedding". I tossed it and got a stainless one I had in my welding stuff. No more cheapo brushes for me. National Welder's Supply has some good stainless ones.
