I notice several of you are not leaving to go south till late December does this cause any concern trailering?
I am leaving in the first couple of weeks in Dec and don't really want to trailer in snow from Michigan. So we will leave between storms or hopefully before them.

You're wise to watch the weather. Stick to the Interstates. They are the first to be maintained. If you get caught, find a parking lot and hunker down til the weather changes and the roads get plowed and salted. I let the sun kiss the road for a couple of hours in the morning before departing.

We are down here now but will drive home in mid-December and back 1/2. We have always driven the rig down in January and the only issues have been in states w/ snow where drivers are not used to it. MD is terrible with bad drivers in even spitting snow. Up north, people know how to drive in snow. That's not to say we have not run into one lane on 81, but it's been doable. We never have had to stop, but would if the weather dictated. We drove either a Class C or A and did tow a car, but I don't know if towing a trailer or 5er makes a difference or not. It may well.
I would say you'd be fine. A ton of people do it.

I would have liked to have left last week but DW wants to stay around for Christmas. I think we will just keep a close eye on weather forcasts and accordingly. This will be the first time for us. Hopefully it won't be a problem.

I can still remember the FIRST time I towed a trailer in icy/snow conditions and I was AMAZED at how much traction I actually had even on icy roads. It's no where NEAR as bad as I'd imagined it would be. If you find yourself in those conditions then just slow down and think WELL AHEAD of what you need to do. Smooth and steady is the ticket. Of course if you have a CHOICE then choose to wait out the storm and travel on dry roads but that just sometimes isn't possible.
Good luck / skip

Head to Florida right after Christmas from Ohio via I77 through WVA. We have lucked out the past couple years since we started "snowbirding". My plan is to look for clear weather or rain only so I can get down to SC the first day. I would not chance driving in snow for safety, but primarly because I don't want to cover my unit with salt. Retired si can wait it out if necessary.

I drove from Alberta last 4th of Jan to Yuma. The weather here was very cold and once in Montana the wind picked up blowing snow across the road but only stuck where there were overpasses, I used 4 wheel drive several times. Passed Helena the weather got better with less snow. Got back into the snow around Salt Lake and pulled into a motel around two in the afternoon and did not leave until the next morning, found out if I had gone another 20 miles there was no snow. My 4 wheel drive did get a lot of use during the trip. On my way back 2 weeks later the roads were free and clear all the way home. I was not towing my 5th wheel but will be this Jan. I hope to leave the 15th of Jan which is a Friday to avoid most of the work week traffic, especially around Salt Lake, but I will be watching the weather and if I have to modify my departure, I will.

Like others we wait till the weather clears. However keep your trailer brakes set on light in snow conditions or it will pass you everytime you put on the brakes. Wheels will lock up and jack knife the trailer. Safe trails,

well luckily this another EL-NINO year. As a rule the weather is pretty decent in the midwest at least from about N. Missouri down to the south. (During el-nino winters) But never try to outsmart the weather. Exception being--if memory serves--It seems like the deep south tends to get ice storms more often in el-nino.

We delayed our departure last year by 24 hrs because of a northeast blizzard on New Year's Eve. By the time we traveled the 1 1/2 miles to the highway on Jan 2, the roads were bare. I wouldn't worry too much about snow; just allow yourself an escape route with an extra day. Camp on!
