sidewall of tires give MAXIMUM tire pressure to use with MAXIMUM load but how does one decide what pressure to run with actual load? My case is a hauler with a dry weight of 5200#, minimal water, dry holding tanks, average food/supplies and no toys. Tires says 2540# at 65PSI. if the load per tire is 75% of max rated load per tire would you run 75% on max pressure?

I would run the 65 psi...better fuel mileage, less tire heat and ready for load when you need it.

You MIGHT get by with lower pressure if your tires are over-sized for the load they're carrying but what would be the advantage in doing so? My advice is to fill your load range D tires to their max. If they're Chinese manufactured tires they'll blow regardless of the pressure you run and if they're GOOD tires they'll last a long time before the tread wears out or age requires they be replaced.

My pickup came with tires with a max. inflation of 80#. When inflated to that pressure it rode like an iron wheeled lumber wagon. I ran more like 40# PSI for better ride, after 9 years the were doing fine when I traded.
the ride quality isn't a consideration with the trailer. But a balloon blown up tight is much easier to "pop" than a flabby one. This time of year heat buildup is not a worry and this shakedown run will not be a long trip. I've always thought of MAXIMUM as just that. The trailer is rated at around 10,000 and that works out pretty well at 2450 per tire @60PSI. My doctor said a MAXIMUM of 6 beers per day, but I don't always drink that many and he doesn't insist that I do.

Seriously, I run 75 PSI in our T H with load range "E's", your not going to wear out trailer tires, they blow out, rot out, or get non repairable flats well before they wear out.
I work with a large fleet of trucks/trailers/etc, i can't say I have ever seen a trailer tire wear out from overinflation.
I guess you could go to the scales and get individual weights on each tire, then calculate the proper pressure based on those weights.
I say tire weight and not axel weight, because there could be a large difference. I understand the "baloon theory", but sidewall flex will cause heat buildup, which is NOT good on any tire.

Always run ST tires at max pressure. They suck as it is, so max pressure helps them live a little longer.
